General Description
Niagara County Community College is seeking a full-time 12-month Technical Assistant for our Biology Laboratory in our Business and STEM Division. This is a great opportunity for someone who is looking to pursue a career in higher education.
The Technical Assistant will be responsible for the preparation of materials used in undergraduate Microbiology, General Biology, Human Biology and Anatomy & Physiology, Horticulture, and Animal Management laboratories. These responsibilities include set-up and take-down for over 35 laboratory sections per semester, preparing lab materials, maintaining equipment, ordering/receiving of lab supplies, maintaining and preparing volumes of laboratory media, live bacterial and fungal cultures as well as autoclaving and disposal of biological and chemical waste.

This position will also be responsible for maintaining stock rooms, laboratory facilities, and computer/audio visual equipment, inventory of equipment, inventory of equipment and is responsible for purchasing for Life Sciences programs within the Business & STEM Division, assisting with budgets and purchase requisitions.
During periods outside of the fall and spring semesters, assignments may include advisement, community outreach activities and overseeing/instructing camp activities.

Typical Work Activities
- Prepare lab materials for use in undergraduate biology laboratories including microbiology media, microbiology cultures and chemical reagents.
- Prepare lab materials for Microbiology, General Biology, Human Biology and Anatomy & Physiology, Horticulture, and Animal Management laboratories.
- Set up and remove class materials weekly in laboratory classrooms;
- Maintain laboratory facility organization including proper sterilization, autoclaving and disposal of biological specimens and chemical wastes.
- Manage inventory of equipment including maintaining records, assisting with budgets and purchase requisitions; ordering/receiving of lab supplies
- Ensure lab equipment is maintained including computer audio/visual equipment.
- Maintain and prepare volumes of laboratory media, live bacterial and fungal cultures.
- Advisement, community outreach activities and overseeing/instructing camp activities during the summer months.
- Other duties as assigned by Supervisor
Essential Functions
Must be able to operate laboratory equipment; must be able to navigate relationships with a diverse population; must be able to operate computers; must be able to speak to groups; must be able to prepare reports and documentation required in performance of duties; must be able to physically perform the duties of the position; must be able to relate to senior members of the department and administration.
Required Qualifications
- Baccalaureate degree in Biology or Biology-related subject area (with a minimum of 20 credit hours in the biological sciences).
- Laboratory experience in the biological sciences.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience in performing techniques in Microbiology: media preparation, culturing of bacteria, protozoans, and/or fungi.
- Disposal of biological and/or chemical wastes.
- Experience setting up labs
- Experience using and maintaining an autoclave;
- Experience maintaining microscopes and other laboratory instruments.
