EDUCATION ANIMAL CARE SUPERVISOR

Full Time (Monday-Friday, occasional nights and weekends as required)

$21.00 to $21.50 an hour

The Education Animal Care Supervisor will manage the animal ambassador team of the Education department which includes multiple species and animals including large mammals (mini horses, sheep, goats, alpacas), small mammals (rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs), reptiles (snakes, lizards), amphibians (frogs), invertebrates (Madagascar hissing cockroaches, hermit crabs, millipedes), and birds (chickens, ducks, doves, pigeons, parrots). Will oversee animal daily cleaning, feeding, health, diets, exercise, enrichment, training and evaluate animal needs. Will track animal usage with routine reporting, maintain supply checks, orders for animal care needs, assess any new animal ambassadors for a good fit in the program and assist with the maintenance of the Education animal's environments. Will cover animal care shifts as needed and act as an animal handler during camps. Must be able to instruct education classes about animals and their care, lead tours of the Center, give off-site presentations, and present animals to and speak with media as needed. The Education Animal Care Supervisor will manage animal care staff and volunteers, train all Education staff on animal care and handling and keep all education staff up to date on animal care news, information, policies, and procedures. Keep current in knowledge about domestic and wild animals, USDA and other government regulations of them, the natural environment, and other related topics in humane education.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree required in animal science or a related field. At least 2 years' experience supervising staff and volunteers. Experience with handling, training, and caring for large and small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and birds. Excellent organizational and time management skills, able to establish and execute priorities with an upbeat attitude, enthusiastic personality and a strong sense of professionalism. Must be familiar with basic human resources issues, possess creative conflict-solving skills and the ability to use positive techniques for handling disruptive people of any age. Experience working with children and adults in a group setting, social media experience, knowledge of interpretive techniques, learning styles, and child development stages preferred. Must be able to work closely with animal hair, dander, dust, hay, and grass, be computer literate and able to safely lift 40 pounds.

As this position may require driving duties, employee must possess a valid CA Driver's License. Good driving record. Ability to drive large vehicles safely Employee must complete a Driver Information Form and provide a recent DMV Driving Record Report to be kept on file, as well as proof of insurance.

WORK CONDITIONS:
60% of this job is conducted indoors under normal office conditions and 40% of this job is conducted outdoors.
