Under the supervision of the Ophthalmology Referral Service (ORS) Supervisor, you will pre-register patients into the UCLA Patient Encountering System via telephone and in-person at the call center. Major duties include the collection of accurate demographic information, soliciting for insurance information and advise of prior authorization requirements. You will also be required to answer the Information and Referral Service lines and direct patients to appropriate sub-specialty, make appointments in the PDM appointment scheduling system; direct patients to faculty offices, community practices, and/or to emergency services; provide general information to incoming callers; process managed care authorizations; maintain logs and tracking mechanisms of all activity; and communicate extensively via e-mail, page system and verbal messages to faculty and office staff. Salary Range: $23.29-33.34 Hourly

Qualifications

Required: * Minimum six months of experience working in healthcare. * Working knowledge of basic medical terminology. * Familiarity with current billing practices including governmental plans such as Medicare and Medicaid. * Six months of experience scheduling patient appointments in electronic system. * Computer skills sufficient to communicate by email. * Verbal and written skills in English sufficient to communicate effectively with patients, doctors and staff. * Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with individuals of varied backgrounds effectively, with professionalism, patience and understanding. * Ability to prioritize tasks in a systematic manner to maximize efficiency. * Ability to demonstrate professionalism while dealing with the stressors of operating a multi-line telephone system. * Ability to work with frequent interruptions and to complete assignments in a timely manner. Preferred: * One year of experience working in clinical teaching environment. * One year of experience working in ophthalmology practice. * Bilingual in English and Spanish.
