Youth Services Coordinator/Youth Services Librarian
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in library science from an American Library
Association (ALA) accredited university or Bachelor’s Emporia Public degree with current enrollment (Fall 2023) in pursuit of a Library, a tax-
Master's degree in library science
Experience working with children (in a professional supported community setting/capacity) resource, is to provide
Able to work a flexible schedule including weekdays, evenings, and weekends users of all ages
Must be able to travel to other locations to perform work, and/or attend work-related meetings, workshops, or access to conferences informational,
Proficiency in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products or Google Suite educational and recreational services,

Preferred Qualifications materials and

Bilingual (Spanish or ASL) programs.
Public library experience
Experience with storytime
Proficient knowledge of books, electronic databases, internet resources, bibliographic sources, reference materials, circulation software, and library automation systems
Knowledge of principles of early literacy, children, and families
Knowledge of collection management standards/principles/best practices
Supervisory experience

Physical Requirements
Must be able to repeatedly stoop, bend, walk, and reach heights of six (6) feet, for prolonged periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation
Must be able to lift or pull book bags and equipment up to fifty (50) pounds
Must be able to push a loaded book cart/truck up to three hundred (300) pounds
Must have manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard

Position Summary
Opportunity to establish a vision for youth services, including programmatic direction and benchmarks, definition of the relationship between outreach and youth services, and to possibly design an interior youth engagement physical area

Responsibilities
Provide excellent internal and external customer service, with skill in oral and written communication, with people of diverse backgrounds
Handle multiple tasks and prioritize workload, delegate as appropriate, and problem solve; be comfortable with a self-directed environment with minimal guidance
Provides reader’s advisory services, and reference assistance to library patrons
Performs circulation desk duties and functions as needed
Plan, prepare, promote, and present programs for 0-18, as well as family/all ages programs, ensuring service to assigned audiences is grounded in appropriate learning principles, research-based approaches, and work to meet organizational goals
Respond to public inquiries regarding the Library’s operations, programs, services, materials, and resources
Provide instruction and training on library resources and procedures internally and externally
Prepares marketing materials such as brochures, flyers, press releases, etc.
Participate on a program planning committee to develop a holistic and coordinated approach to providing services to the community
Develop and sustain relationships with community members, local organizations, school professionals, and other adults who work with children
Represent the Emporia Public Library to external organizations, including the press
Serve as a representative of the Emporia Public Library to outside agencies, community groups, and the general public; establish and maintain positive community relationships and mutually beneficial partnerships
Pursue professional development opportunities that enhances knowledge of public library issues and trends
Attend, facilitate and participate in a variety of roles within meetings, workshops, seminars, and/or conferences; stay apprised of trends and developments in the field of public library operations
Maintain and develop a diverse and up-to-date collection for youth that meets educational, informational, and entertainment needs of families (selection, purchase, and deselection)
Is responsible for managing budgeted funds for youth programs and collections
Create displays, coordinating with library-wide themes to ensure community appeal, representation of collection, and historic heritage month/calendar date observations
Collect and interpret data related to library performance, submit monthly and annual statistical reports

Inventory youth services supplies and store responsibly
May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, and guidance to others
Serve as building supervisor applying building-wide policies and procedures, including security
Interpret, communicate and apply the Library’s policies and procedures; address and assist in resolving customer concerns, incidents, and complaints
Understand early literacy strategies, current library trends and best practices and appropriately integrates these ideas
Understand the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read
Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library
Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy
Actively support and respects diversity in the workplace
Report to and be evaluated by the Executive Director

Pay Range
$16-23/hour (full-time 40 hours per week)
Commensurate based on experience and qualifications

About our library
The Emporia Public Library, founded in 1869, is the oldest library in the State of
Kansas in continuous operation. Located in downtown Emporia, Lyon County’s capital, the library serves residents of the city and county as a whole, in addition to the many out-of-town guests who visit for local events such as Gravel Unbound, disc golf tournaments, and the annual Great American Market. An active participant in civic life, the library boasts partnerships with local entrepreneurs, service organizations, and nonprofits.

The Emporia Public Library served over 66,000 visitors in 2022, over 13,000 of whom were program attendees. Programs range in age-focused offerings, and cater to the diverse interests of the community. In addition to access to more than 60,000 physical materials, the library provides a meeting room and study rooms, access to computers, printing, and faxing, and approximately 20 knowledgeable and friendly staff.

In 2022, the library circulated over 50,000 materials to 8,400 registered patrons, serving them through the current building located in downtown Emporia and through the Library on the Go van. The library’s collections include print materials and media, supplemented by a Library of Things and a regionally-shared collection of e-materials.
