In partnership with our sponsoring organization, Equal Heart, the YMCA at Virginia Tech is recruiting individuals to serve as AmeriCorps members to provide youth enrichment in a summer program setting. In exchange for their service, AmeriCorps Members receive a bi-weekly living allowance and an end-of-term education award – total living allowance is $3000, education award is $1459.26.
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

General Description
The YMCA at Virginia Tech will offer AmeriCorps positions averaging 30 hours per week from May 30 to August 11 2023. (The majority of hours will occur between 8:15 AM and 5:45 PM, Monday through Friday; there may be a few hours outside of this timeframe). The focus of this work will be assisting in Radford City Public School's academic remediation program for elementary-aged students. The program will include an academic remediation session in the morning and and enrichment session in the afternoon.
Please note: The summer program with Radford City Public Schools will take occur from July to August 2023. Your AmeriCorps membership will begin on May 30. Therefore, your AmeriCorps schedule from May 30 until the RCPS program begins in July will be alternative tasks assigned by the YMCA at Virginia Tech, such as assisting our summer youth program and/or feeding program in Blacksburg.
Scope of Work
I. Enrichment Coordination
a. Lead and coordinate engaging enrichment activities for elementary-aged students that incorporate a wide range of interests including but not limited to arts and crafts, music, creative thinking, play-based learning, teamwork, and STEM activities
b. Partner with staff in preparing the classroom, organizing materials, assisting students with arrival and departure, and recording attendance
c. Provide discipline and implement behavior modification plans when necessary
II. Classroom management
a. Maintain positive “classroom” dynamics for children
b. Establish and maintain a professional rapport with participants and their parents
c. May also oversee college-aged volunteers who will assist with program delivery
d. Ensure interactions support positive socio/emotional/cognitive/physical growth
and development of participants
III. General program delivery
a. Assist with recess, lunch, and snack every day
b. Help identify, create, and deliver enrichment activities
c. Adhere to all policies and procedures for both the YMCA and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE)
Required Skills and Knowledge
· Ability to lead groups of elementary-aged students
· Ability to recognize immediate needs and take initiative in meeting them without specific instruction
· Strong communication capabilities
· Skilled at group dynamics and developing connectivity among groups of people
· Valid driver’s license
· Self-starter who possesses strong leadership skills
· Members must be available for the entire summer period without extended breaks or vacations
