Windows Systems Administrator

Our Cadre5 Lab Partners division has partnered with Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to hire a qualified Windows Systems Administrator.
ORNL delivers scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs needed to realize solutions in energy and national security and provides economic benefit to the nation. This premier research institution located near Knoxville in Oak Ridge, TN, addresses national needs through impactful research and world-leading research centers.
This is a full-time, position. This position requires a hybrid work model.

- Design, install, configure, automation, and maintenance of Server systems, Storage, Backup, and VMWare clusters in support of customer needs
- Manage and implementing continuous process improvements
- Provide technical consulting in the selection and purchase of hardware and software systems
- Evaluate new technology options and vendor products
- Collaborate with research teams to ensure new environments meet requirements
- Identify and document IT best practices that will improve the systems deployment function
- Ability to present and communicate complex technical concepts from small to medium groups of scientists and engineers
- Ensure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with ORNL procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.
- Troubleshoot system problems quickly and effectively.
- Work with other systems engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.
- Answer escalated helpline calls in addition to primary project work.
- Monitor systems performance.
- Install and configure software, both commercial packages and various open-source packages.
- Maintain documentation/notes on software builds and installs.
- Off hours support may be required.
- Responsible for the execution of information security functions and infrastructures maintenance and operations to ensure secure, reliable, uninterrupted availability of the secure systems in 5300N in accordance with ORNL, DOE, DOD, and NIST security guidelines and requirements
- Perform configuration, administration, and maintenance on classified MS Windows and RHEL servers, MS Active Directory, VMWare infrastructure, zero-client infrastructure, MS Windows desktop, RSA, and COMSEC TACLANEs
- Perform Information security control implementation and auditing, self-auditing of DISA STIG requirement implementation and remediation, and classified infrastructure formal audit preparation
- Perform infrastructure lifecycle planning/management per ORNL requirements and is responsible for classified equipment inventory dispositions (e.g., procurement, auditing, and destruction)
- Perform reporting, directly works with DOE Authorizing Official, and supports Nessus Tennable vulnerability scanning and reporting.
- Supports classified remote activities per ORNL requirements.
- Work closely with other departments for collaborating classified IT projects.
- Develop and recommend cost effective technical system improvements for classified IT systems.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related technical subjects, or a minimum of 2 years' experience (an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered)
- Experience in automation of system administration tasks.
- Experience with scripting and automating tasks and processes to improve overall efficiency
- Experience with backup architecture and operations
- Moderate fluency in at least one scripting language such as PowerShell, Python, or equivalent
- Experience managing a virtualized environment including tuning and maintenance
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
- The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance is required. This requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Enterprise automated VM Cluster installation/configuration/management experience
- Strong knowledge of multiple current operating systems
- Demonstrated ability to perform job tasks while considering cyber security risk of those tasks, and consulting with security professionals when necessary
- Knowledge of scripting or programming languages such as Python or PowerShell. Candidate should also be able to utilize source code repositories for storage and script revisions.
- Knowledge of enterprise class server/storage hardware
- Experience in an environment requiring change control processes
- Experience with performance and diagnostic tools for benchmarking, analysis and tuning of systems, networking, and storage.
- Experience with Nagios, Check MK, Solarwinds, Ganglia, and other network and device monitoring systems.
- Previous experience working in a government, scientific, or other highly technical environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and ability to work well with peer system administrators.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Technical documentation skills, including ability to prepare simple documentation web pages.
