Job Description
Under general supervision, the Water/Wastewater Utility Labor position is a progressive experience position responsible for monitoring, maintain, and operating grounds, equipment, recording data, collecting samples, and system process control in compliance with regulatory agency guidelines. Must be willing to learn the Water/Wastewater process in a timely manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Learn to analyze and monitor wastewater treatment system processes and identifies and implements simple process adjustments to ensure optimum performance of plant.
- Learn to observe and inspect plant influent and effluent and all plant equipment at regular intervals, including, but not limited to, monitoring, and maintaining proper wastewater levels in tanks and/or overflow boxes.
- Learn to Operate and maintain process equipment including but not limited to, preventive maintenance, repair, grounds keeping, and general housekeeping.
- Learn to checks levels, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, chemical feed systems, and other equipment.
- Learn to records readings, change charts, regulate, and adjust processes to meet changing operational needs.
- Learn to collect, preserve, and properly store samples for laboratory analysis.
- Participates in maintenance by exercising system valves, monitoring for leaks, and participating in shutdowns during repairs.
- Monitors and performs housekeeping duties to ensure a safe working environment.
- Learn to perform basic process control measurements.
- Learn to Lubricate, dismantle, and assemble parts and equipment.
- Participates in the troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance of a variety of equipment including pumps, piping and valves.
- Learn to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Learn to prepare daily logs of plant operation and control.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships.
- Participates in various special projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Supports the relationship between the Village of Surfside Beach and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and Village staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and Village information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
- Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge:
- City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
- Learn Wastewater treatment principles, methods, and practices.
- Ability to handle dangerous chemicals, such as chlorine gas.
- Learn Methods, techniques and equipment used in wastewater treatment.
- Learn Equipment maintenance procedures and processes.
- Learn SCADA system operations.
- Learn Wastewater sampling procedures.
- Learn Wastewater chemistry.
- Learn Wastewater distribution systems.
- Local, state, and federal laws, codes, regulations and permits affecting wastewater treatment operations.
- Learn Recordkeeping and reporting procedures.
- Learn Safety rules and regulations.
- Business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.
Skill in:
- Handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness, and sound judgment.
- Understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
- Compiling data; maintaining records and files; and preparing clear and concise reports.
- Providing efficient customer service.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or equivalent; The ability to obtain a Wastewater Treatment Operator “D” license from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TECQ) within 1 year of employment.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
- Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed both in an indoor and outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 60 pounds. The ability to lawfully respond to an emergency from residence within 30 minutes.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $13.00 - $14.00 per hour
