Typically, Monday – Friday, 8 am - 4:30 pm. Work hours may vary from time to time.


Starting Pay
: $16 - $18 per hour DOE

Additional pay for water licenses. Mustang SUD pays for certification courses and testing if you do not have a water license.

  • Mustang Special Utility District pays for all the courses and testing necessary for the employee to complete Collections Certification.
  • Successful completion of each certification, Collections Class I, II, and III are eligible for a $160 certification pay allowance included in each paycheck for each certification.
  • Mustang also pays for renewal hours/ courses for each certification.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform a variety of customer service fieldwork for wastewater customers. Wastewater Collections Operators are responsible for skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repairs of wastewater system facilities; operating a variety of light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment, and ensuring public health and safety by preventing and/or responding to sewage overflows and blockages. They inspect, clean, maintain, construct and repair wastewater collection systems, including sanitary sewers, pump stations, pipes, and manholes.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs work in confined spaces; performs necessary precautions before entering confined spaces with potentially hazardous atmospheres; uses air quality monitors and ventilators.
  • Serves in emergency standby capacity; provides customer service and performs all aspects of collection system maintenance and repairs during regular work hours, including holidays and weekends.
  • Operates various vehicles, equipment, and tools, including service trucks, dump trucks, vacuum trucks, skid steers, backhoes, and related attachments, large trailers, trench tampers, concrete and asphalt cutting saws, hand and power tools, loads and unloads vehicles and equipment.
  • Sets traffic control, including safety devices, signs, and barricades; ensures the safety of the public and work crew.
  • Locates sewer lines, including utilizing a magnetic locator; assists contractors and other utility companies in the field.
  • Operates closed circuit televising inspection system; monitors underground sewer lines and sewer laterals; identify any signs of blockage/debris that may interrupt the sanitary sewer flow; identifies major problems with pipes, including cracks, damages, holes, and collapsed pipes.
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
  • Be available for on-call weekends and after-hours assignments.
  • Work cooperatively with other Mustang employees.
  • Communicate orally with co-workers, customers, and/or the public in a face-to-face, one-to-one setting.
  • Provides courteous customer service in a variety of conditions; response to questions and inquiries from the general public; contacts property occupants in connection with sewer maintenance work, responds to customer problems and complaints.
  • Learn job-related material through oral instruction and observation or through structured lectures in an on-the-job training setting or in a classroom.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Make continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements to make repairs to the wastewater collection system.
  • Make fine, highly controlled manipulations of objects.
  • Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously to operate the equipment.
  • Lift arms above shoulder level.
  • Climbs steps to get into and out of equipment.
  • Travel across rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces at an excavation site.
  • Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet).

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Methods, materials, tools, equipment, and practices used in repairing and installing wastewater collection mains, lift stations, and SCADA operations.
  • The hazards inherent in wastewater maintenance work and safety measures required.
  • Wastewater operating systems of Mustang and any contracted Fresh Water Supply Districts
  • Backfilling, compaction, and grading.
  • The use and care of hand tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the wastewater collection system.
  • Operation maintenance and record keeping of televised sewer lines.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This classification requires using personal or Mustang vehicles while conducting Mustang business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employees will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending on work location, assignment, or shift.
    • Must possess a Class-A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or be able to obtain one within 6 months of employment.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One year of general maintenance and construction experience. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted, pending Wastewater Operations Manager’s approval.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Category I Wastewater Collection License and/or
  • Class C Wastewater Operator License and/or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
