Catskill Animal Sanctuary operates with a small, full-time staff who rely on caring and dedicated volunteers for help with animal care, events, fundraising, communications, office tasks, building and grounds maintenance, outreach and educational programs.

Most sanctuary volunteers want to work within animal care; consequently, the position’s primary responsibilities relate to managing the volunteer program as it pertains to animal care with individual volunteers and volunteer groups. This position will help recruit and support volunteers for other parts of the organization as well. The Volunteer Coordinator will take the lead in supporting and motivating volunteers to ensure they enjoy, appreciate and understand their valued contributions to the efforts of the organization.

The Volunteer Coordinator is also responsible for the general administration and day-to-day coordination of the volunteer programs for all departments: basic recruitment activities, responding to inquiries and volunteer applications, and maintaining schedules. The Volunteer Coordinator reports to the Director of Sanctuary Operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides supervision and feedback to animal care volunteers (both individuals and groups) as needed
• Manages the volunteer@casanctuary.org email address
• Responds to volunteer inquiries in a timely manner
• Works with management to place volunteers in other areas of need: facilities, office staff, tours, communications, events etc.
• Checks on volunteers frequently during their shift, and works alongside them to make sure tasks are completed.
• Ensures that all volunteers and interns have completed necessary paperwork (Liability waiver, driving agreement, etc.) before they begin working.
• Ensures volunteers are supported, motivated, and receive feedback and acknowledgement
• Promotes the program at local events and organizations such as farmers markets, conferences, festivals and events
• Assists in maintenance of the volunteer resources and web page content
• Maintains online and onsite calendars used in the management of the volunteers
• Provide volunteers background on, stories about, and insight into Catskill’s animal residents
• Tracks, assesses and reports volunteer metrics.
• On days when there are no volunteers and all administrative tasks are completed, the volunteer coordinator will assist with cleaning or other tasks as assigned by DSO.

• The ability to communicate with, supervise, empower, and motivate volunteers to be effective in their roles
• Excellent organization, time management, and team management skills
• Strong administrative skills and an ability to maintain records and produce clear written and oral reports
• This position is 5 days a week onsite only. Weekends are required.

EXPERIENCE:

• Experience with and knowledge of farm animals and operations
• Prior work with nonprofit organizations a plus
• Management and leadership experience preferred
• Experience recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers or staff a plus
• Database administration experience a plus
