Job description
The Denver Police Department's Victim Assistance Unit (VAU) is seeking to fill multiple Victim Advocate positions.
This is an on-call position which will work no more than 39 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits. On-call positions may have routine or variable work schedules. VAU work schedules and assignments are created and posted monthly.
Shifts will primarily consist of overnights, weekends, and holidays.
Shift hours are from 1500-0730 on Weekends and 1630-0730 on Weekdays.
The Victim Assistance Unit is part of the Crisis Services Bureau of the Denver Police Department. Our VAU has been in existence for over 33 years and is one of the most extensive in the Nation. We are a unique city which focuses on the importance and priority of victim services.
While the use of Marijuana is legal in the State of Colorado, its use is strictly prohibited for Employees of the Denver Police Department. Applicants should not have used marijuana in the past year.
Job Responsibilities include:
- Provides on-scene crisis intervention services to victims of and witnesses to all types of crime and incidents of non-criminal stark misfortune including providing death and emergency notification.
- Performs self-initiated or police-requested outreach, within specified time of the crime occurrence, to victims of a specific crime such as domestic violence or sexual assault and to victims of stark misfortune from authorized Denver Police Department (DPD) office or off-site locations.
- Provides victim(s) and witness(s) with information about police investigations, departmental policy and procedure, and provides detectives with pertinent information.
- Identifies victim(s), witness(s) and survivor needs and makes referrals to appropriate support services.
- Educates community service and support agencies in the Unit activities and procedures.
- Provides on-going training and support throughout (DPD) related to victim rights and issues regarding victim(s) and available services.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience providing on-scene crisis intervention services to victims of and witnesses to all types of crime.
- Experience providing advocacy to victims and witnesses of crime and stark misfortune.
- Prior experience in providing community-based advocacy to victims and witness of crime and stark misfortune.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish

- Education Requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice, or related field.
- Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of paid or volunteer human services experience providing casework, case management or trauma services to the victims of violent or non-violent crimes.
- Education and Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.
- Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
- License/Certification Requirement: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
- Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

Pay: $24.90 - $37.35 per hour
