Job description
We are seeking a dependable and skilled Veterinary Technician with, ideally, at least 3 years experience to help us with our expanding family owned and operated small animal practice. Ability to assist in surgery and dentistry is a plus!
Essential Job Functions Include:
- Preparation of exam rooms
- Perform physical assessments and record observations legibly in files
- Assist veterinarian in all aspects during surgical procedures; pre-medication, set up, induction, preparation and maintenance of general anesthesia, surgical monitoring, surgical assisting, recovery, writing post op orders and pain management protocols
- Communicate patient status, concerns or questions with clients, doctors, other technicians or assistants
- Perform blood collection via all routes and ability to know best collection method based on individual patient needs or specific test requirements; prepare all forms to be sent to outside labs
- Preparation of fluid therapy and monitoring
- Assist with dosage calculations and dispensing of injectable medications including controlled substances, dosing and administering route protocols and common contraindications
- Review prescriptions issued by Doctors to assure accuracy; dispense prescribed medications and other pharmaceuticals for patient care
- Monitor and manage the basic needs of each patient
- Admit patients to hospital by following all admission protocols
- Clean and stock exam rooms, treatment tables and other parts of the hospital
- Proficient use of Cornerstone
- Prepare patients for discharge to owners including client education about home care and medications to be given
- Clear understanding and enforcement of OSHA regulations and hospital safety standards
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and will occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of advanced fluid therapy, anesthetic monitoring, CPR and all aspects of laboratory and radiology
- Knowledge of medical indications of pharmaceuticals, common drug interactions and approximate dosages
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong work ethic and a positive attitude
- Must be flexible and able to adapt to new situations
- Ability to act as a team player
