Nassau Humane Society is looking for a Veterinary Technician for our shelter medical department! We are seeking a self-motivated employee who does well with organization and time-management. Three years of Veterinary Technician experience is preferred but not required. Must be comfortable holding animals for medical exams. Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Working with the Lead Technician to conduct basic wellness, including administering vaccinations, blood draws, and parasite treatments.
  • Handle basic care duties such as cleaning and dressing wounds, administering medication and special diets, collecting samples, checking vitals, and cleaning treatment areas.
  • Update and maintain patient files, review care plans, and handle other administrative duties as necessary.
  • Enter all medical and surgical details into PetPoint in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Calculate, administer, and record medications.
  • Respond to emergency situations and administer triage care, as needed.
  • Perform daily health evaluations, scheduled treatments, intake exams and vaccinations of shelter animals.
  • Conduct daily rounds, monitor daily health of animals in shelter.
  • Perform routine exams on shelter animals both with and without a veterinarian.
  • Responsible for maintaining the inventory of all medical supplies.
  • Prepare list of all animals scheduled for spay/neuter surgery.
  • Prepare all surgical paperwork relating to spay/neuter surgeries
  • Responsible for making sure all surgical patients are of weight and healthy for scheduled surgery.
  • Responsible for completing, maintaining, and displaying all medical and or cleaning charts on front of designated kennel(s).
  • Responsible for overall cleanliness and organization of relevant work area.
  • Assist in care, treatment of animals in foster according to appointment schedule.
  • Perform and assist with euthanasia of shelter animals if required.
  • Notify behavior team of animal behavioral needs and/or concerns during intake exam.
  • Attend and participate in departmental, management, and shelter meetings. Attend educational opportunities as recommended/approved.
  • Maintains departmental procedures and protocols regarding humane care and treatment of animals at all times.
  • Follow safety guidelines and maintain a healthy and safe environment for animals and people.
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal, volunteer, or organization at risk.
  • Self-motivated and work well with others.

Pay: From $17.50 per hour
