Job Description
Under the direction of the Utility Coordinator, this position responds to requests from utility companies, contractors, plumbers, state agencies and customers for utility locations pertaining to renewal, replacement and/or adjustments of utilities. Assists the Utility Coordinator to maintain the material safety data sheet and meet other safety requirements. This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel.
- Locates city owned utilities for other utility companies, contractors, plumbers, state agencies and customers.
- Advises and suggests to excavators proper methods and location of excavations to prevent present and/or future damage to city utilities.
- Effectively interfaces with customers, city personnel, engineers and/or contractors.
- Obtains timely information concerning the need for utility adjustments and/or relocations and forwarding this information to Water Supervisor and/or proper departments.
- Provides information to the Water Supervisor of needed replacement, repair or installation of inadequate or deteriorated water and wastewater appurtenances found in the field.
- Serves as alternate Utility Coordinator when needed.
- Responds to after-hours calls on an as-needed basis
- Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Ability to exercise sound judgement when performing the assigned work or when addressing emergency situations.
- Ability to read and understand maps, use GIS and other location equipment and understand grades and percentage of grades.
- Knowledgeable of material safety data sheet, hazardous information city policies, procedures and specifications.
- Skill in operating and performing minor repairs on all types of equipment used in digging and locating water and sewer lines such as valve keys, hydraulic valves, shovels, picks, sledge hammers, jack hammers, line and metal detectors and the like.
- Ability to work collaboratively on a team.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability keep accurate records
Licenses/Certification
Required Qualifications
- Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent (GED).
- One year of experience in the utility field is preferred.
- The City of Amarillo may consider all related education and/or experience in determining an applicant’s minimum qualifications and starting salary.
