Job Summary
The User Services Librarian develops and implements user services across Neilson and Alumnae Gym libraries ensuring excellent user experience to the Smith community, researchers and the public. They manage 5 full-time employees and are responsible for hiring, training and evaluating 40-50 student employees. They design, implement and assess user services including the central service point, reserves, circulation and billing. Uses judgment, problem-solving and critical thinking in managing a fast-paced environment with heavy use of multiple services by many constituent groups. They lead the development, implementation and assessment of student and staff training and cross-training with ITS colleagues in Public Services functions and services.
They are responsible for: for implementation, assessment and continuous improvement of library services at the central service point; building and maintaining connections and collaborations with the ITS partners on the central service point service; responsible for the safety and security of library users, staff and collections during business hours; Ensuring seamless and effective communication regarding services, issues, events and more across the Learning Commons, Central Service Point, Special Collections, Learning, Research and Technology and Public Services.

Essential Functions
Supervision & Operations (70%)
  • Recruit, retain, and develop a diverse and outstanding team: Recruit, hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate 3-5 full-time staff and approximately 40-50 student staff; design and lead student training program for Neilson; collaborate with Special Collections Public Services and LRT on student training
  • Plan and lead libraries wide cross-training for student staff
  • With the Director of Public Services, develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices for the service points in Neilson Library
  • With the Director of Public Services, create and communicate a successful vision for the service points
  • Collaborate with colleagues from the Learning, Research, & Technology (LRT) team to develop and implement training associated with the provision of general research assistance at all Neilson service points, and the routing of in-depth consultations to subject specialists
  • Work with multiple stakeholders across library departments and library partners (Conway, Learning Commons, ITS, Facilities, and Campus Safety) to identify challenges associated in the in-person delivery of services, and to implement mechanisms to meet and exceed library users' needs and expectations
  • Analyze and improve the effectiveness of the service points and library space usage
  • Strategically plan for the ongoing improvement of all services offered at the service points
  • Serve as primary back-up to the Director of Public Services for service issues
  • Serve as primary back-up to the Operations Manager for building facilities and security issues
  • Serve as primary backup for the Operations Manager for OneCard access to the libraries and Alumni Gymnasium
  • Perform other duties as requested by the library leadership

Direct User Support (20%)
  • Provide supervision at the service points in Neilson Library
  • Provide staff support for public events in Neilson Library. This includes open houses, tours, as well as events taking place in Neilson
  • Perform related duties as required
Other Functions
Service (10%)
Engage in continuous professional self-development and keep current with emerging librarianship. Participate in the work of the Libraries through service on library-wide and Five College committes. Participate in library wide teams, committees and working groups and professional activities. Represent Smith College Libraries at conferences and engage with national organizations in access services and public services.

Will include occasional nights and weekends. Perform related duties as required. All employees are expected to participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)
  • Master's degree or equivalent and three years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience
  • One year of supervisory experience, including hiring, training, and evaluating staff performance
  • Strong user service philosophy and a commitment to service improvement and innovation
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Academic library experience
  • Experience with library systems
  • Knowledge of research and reference materials
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing and evaluating data to identity trends and improve services and operations
  • Experience in customer service
