Position Summary:

Under the supervision of Journeyman Lineman Manager, perform duties of a lineman to include the installation, maintenance and repair all transmission and distribution electrical systems and associated equipment, both overhead and underground, while utilizing line trucks, aerial boom, lifts and wire pulling equipment. Maintain lines and services which may include pole climbing, hot sticking, and working out of truck mounted bucket lifts to construct, repair or maintain line equipment or string, splice and sag wire on live or dead circuits. Operate switches, cutouts and use grounding devices to work on de-energized lines and equipment. Maintain Wind Turbine(s) and substation(s) on reservation lands as well as maintaining the new electrical connections for further development on the Isabella Reservation in Mt. Pleasant and Saganing District. Conduct generator inspections, transformer inspection and repair, and other services related to high voltage work. Perform as an in-house electrician for commercial building needs and repairs.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform overhead and underground line construction duties as directed by the Journeyman Lineman Manager.
  • Confer with the Journeyman Lineman Manager to coordinate daily work schedules.
  • Ensure that all equipment, vehicles, and tools are properly accounted for, used, and maintained.
  • Confer with Manager, Director and Construction committee to discuss construction issues and improve methods.
  • Complete all electrical repairs as directed by Manager or Director for all tribal buildings.
  • Construct normal line extensions involving primary and secondary facilities, install transformers, and services.
  • Repair electric distribution systems and substations in order to maintain service.
  • Patrol and inspect lines and schedule maintenance.
  • Connect distribution transformers of various sizes and voltages; determine proper size of transformer and fuses.
  • Conduct investigations of customer complaints regarding voltage problems.
  • Operate an aerial lift device in conjunction with construction, operation and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution facilities using live line tools.
  • Restore power by switching, isolating, and resetting circuit breakers, reclosers, line taps, and other electrical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot systems faults on power distribution lines.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and report any violations.
  • Perform maintenance on the wind turbine(s).
  • Conduct appropriate inspections and repairs to tribal generators, transfer switches, transformers, substations, connections, and other electrical needs.
  • Work with engineers and contractors in order to connect new buildings to the Tribal Distribution Systems.
  • Coordinate and work with other utility entities as needed for water, and wastewater.
  • Develop and submit reports or other documents as required.
  • Adhere to all safety precautions including internal policies and OSHA related regulations.
  • Oversee operations of computerized systems.
  • Handle emergency response to utility and major equipment failures.
  • Remain on-call for emergencies.
  • Serve as an electrician for commercial building needs and repairs.
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:

  • Contact with staff.
  • Contact and interact with contractors and engineers for repairs and new construction.
  • Contact with SECR/SELC electricians to monitor and maintain the electrical systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of electric overhead and underground distribution system applications.
  • Knowledge of EPA, NESC, OSHA, and electrical compliance.
  • Knowledge of electric distribution system operations, emergency restoration and electric circuit laws.
  • Knowledge of equipment to locate faults, safe maintenance/operation procedures for the electric distribution system.
  • Knowledge of Utilities Rules and Regulations and Utilities Construction Standards.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and of safety precautions related to the electrical system.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining electric distribution system equipment, and specialized equipment and tools.
  • Skill in reading and understanding electric system maps and overhead, underground and switching location designations.
  • Skill in making effective decisions in emergency situations.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and understand specs, blueprints, and plans.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.
  • Ability to make solid decisions and exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to prepare records and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain work orders.


Physical Demands:

  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with providing maintenance and computer work.
  • Required to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Required to climb 130 foot tower with a 50 pound gear pack.
  • Occasionally sit, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, balance, crouch or crawl.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.


Work Environment:

  • Must possess sufficient stamina to work under all types of weather conditions including extreme hot/cold and to lift, carry, push, or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials
  • Work requires climbing wooden poles and towers and can be in confined, awkward or cramped spaces.
  • Exposure to electromagnetic fields and high voltage electricity.
  • Frequent risk of electrical shock, burns, slip and falls.
  • Conditions exist where there is a danger to life, body, and/or health.
  • Required to work other shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations.
  • Travel is required.

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • State of Michigan Journeyman Electrician License
  • Proficient computer skills required.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.


Desired Qualifications:

  • State of Michigan Journeyman Lineman License.
  • Two years lineman experience.
  • Backhoe operation experience.


License, Certification, or Special Requirements:

  • State of Michigan Journeyman Electrician License.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver’s License and must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver’s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions
