Summary:
This position performs a full range of radio and telephone operational duties in the Police Department, which is a 24/7/365 day operation, for the Alabama Coushatta Tribe of Texas.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Operate radio consoles (Police 1 & Police 2), Computer Aided Dispatch, Police Department’s RMS, Texas Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center (TCIC/NCIC), Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (TLETS), and Department Mobile Data Terminals (MDT)’s.
· Receive emergency and/or non-emergency calls from the public requesting police assistance.
· Maintain contact with all units on assignment, including status and location of police officers, and other public safety personnel.
· Enter and retrieve information quickly from a variety of local and automated law enforcement systems.
· Receive requests for information regarding vehicle registration, driving records and warrants and provide pertinent data.
· Monitor several complex radio frequencies.
· Provide the public with basic safeguard instructions in dangerous conditions prior to arrival of trained police personnel.
· Processes and evaluates information received, prioritizes calls and dispatches required units and/or agencies.
· Monitors and coordinates police unit activity and assignments via police radio frequencies and MDT’s.
· Utilizes technology such as computers, radio systems, telephones, fax machines and other communication equipment.
· Creates and maintains automated logs of public safety communications activity.
· Creates and maintains manual logs as required by NCIC/TCIC and NLETS/TLETS.
· Accesses and enters sensitive data in local/state/national databases as necessary for investigative purposes.
· Enters and maintains files for persons or property pending apprehension/recovery.
· Maintains appropriate security and confidentiality of information created or encountered in the performance of assigned duties.
· Keeps informed of departmental regulations, policies and procedures, as well as State and federal mandates.
· Maintain telephone and radio communications with Tribal Police Officers, Polk County Sheriff’s Department, Tyler County Sheriff’s Department, Alabama-Coushatta Fire Department, and other related personnel.
· Ensure compliance with Department of Public Safety (DPS) standards.
· Maintain an inventory of supplies for the Dispatch Office.
· Monitor and respond to all incoming silent and fallback emergency alarms calls, and guard radio communications.
· Provide emergency notifications in major incidents and fleet accidents when a supervisor is unavailable.
· Dispatch, coordinate and provide information to and from jurisdictional agencies.
· Broadcast wanted/missing notices and other law enforcement related bulletins.
· Maintain accurate call information.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
· Applicant must be at least 19 years of age or older
· Applicant must be a United States citizen
· Knowledge of computer technology and equipment.
· Knowledge of law enforcement terminology and procedures.
· Must be thoroughly familiar with communications systems and dispatching procedures as well as all applicable Department policies and procedures.
· Requires excellent verbal and writing skills.
· Requires attaining and maintaining certifications for access into local, state, and national criminal history databases and associated law enforcement telecommunications system.
· Skill in multi-tasking – coordinating simultaneous mental, manual and visual activities.
· Skill in operating a variety of communications equipment effectively, such as two-way radios and telephone equipment.
· Skill in reading and interpreting maps to determine locations and jurisdictional boundaries.
· Ability to handle stressful situations and deal with the public both courteously and professionally.
· Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy.
· Able to work rotating shift assignments and overtime as required, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
· Ability to frequently sit, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift and/or move up to 10 lbs., and use of motor skills (sight, hear, smell, taste, and touch).
· Must not pose a direct threat to the health and safety of self or to others in the work place, and the community.
· Must possess and maintain physical strength, agility, and stamina to perform essential job functions
· Must have a valid Texas Driver License with a good driving record
· Must be able to pass a drug test.
· Must be able to pass a background check and all additional pre-service tests
Education and Experience:
· High School Diploma or its equivalent
· One (1) Year experience in law enforcement communications preferred
· Must have satisfactorily completed the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Basic Telecommunication course
· Ability to successfully complete certification training courses for TLETS/OMNIXX, Telecommunication Device for Deaf (TDD), TLETS, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
· Ability to complete certification courses using the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) National Crime Information center/Texas Crime Information Center (NCIC/TCIC) and the Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (TLETS) is highly preferred, but not required
