Job description
The Homecare Services Supervisor (HSS) is a full-time employee who generally works 1st shift when the greatest number of appointments & activities are likely to occur. It is advised that the HSS work one weekend day to provide leadership to weekend staff. The HSS is first a caregiver & leads by example to ensure quality care to clients.
There are 3 primary areas of responsibility assigned to the HSS (i.e., direct caregiving, supervision & training, operations). If these 3 areas are consistently & effectively managed, house operation should be well organized & relatively smooth. Client incidents are fairly commonplace, but if properly utilizing the Resources Guide (“What To Do If…”), all major categories of incidents & how to respond are outlined in step-by-step detail.
Direct Caregiving
- Provide personal care services to clients according to their care plan, expressed needs, etc.
- Provide reminders & assistance to clients in reordering medications.
Supervision & Training
- Make sure that caregivers arrive on time for shifts.
- Make sure that caregivers are clocking in / out every shift.
- Make sure that caregivers provide care according to the client’s care plan.
- Make sure that caregivers document accurately in LEAF tablet & before the end of their shift.
- Make sure that caregivers complete all assigned tasks (for clients as well as household tasks).
- Go over each area of the competency checklist with new hires; provide further training if needed.
- Go over emergency procedures & teach staff how to use the Resource Guide.
- Provide equipment training, as needed (how to use hoyer lift, glucometer, O2, etc.)
- Take care of call offs & no shows by trying to fill shifts before the director must get involved.
- Make sure that all shifts are filled even if that means that you fill the shift yourself, & always be ready to have back ups in place if you suspect a call off.
Operations
- Assist director with developing staff schedules.
- Make sure that client appointments are scheduled, there is transportation set up & client is ready for appointment.
- Make & carry out healthy activity schedules, making sure that all caregivers follow the plan & encourage clients to participate.
- Make sure that grocery shopping & meals are planned on an individual basis & the menu reflects each client’s preferences.
- Make sure that LEAF tablet is completed correctly & during each shift (documentation should be done before the caregiver leaves the shift).
- Report incidents immediately, describe them in great detail & share with Director & Operations Specialist.
- Regularly check client & house binders to make sure that they are up-to-date & complete.
- Do money, narcotic & supply counts.
- Report all maintenance issues according to protocol.
