What will I do? The Surgical Tech performs a variety of technical duties to assist in preparing and caring for pre-operative patients. The tasks and responsibilities include: Assembling supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures; Preparing sterile instrument table; Preparing patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards; Maintaining aseptic techniques and actively monitoring situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique: Providing comfort and support for pre-operative patients; Transporting patients to and from surgical suite; Positioning patient according to type of surgery; Assisting the surgical team in surgical procedures (which may include passing instruments, sponges and sutures); Maintaining work area; Gathering equipment for cleaning and sterilization; Assisting in the monitoring of the patient through the procedure; Providing age and culturally appropriate care; Orienting and mentoring new staff members; and Following Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

What else do I need to know? Candidates must be a graduate of a formal surgical technologist program. A qualified Certified Surgical Tech will hold a Certification as a Surgical Technologist.
