We are partnering with our client to assist with their search for a Summer Teacher for the Youth Mental Health Academy (YMHA). Our client is an independent, national nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders. They work to deliver the highest standards of care, advance the science of the developing brain, and empower parents, professionals and policymakers to support children when and where they need it most.

The summer academy is a project-based learning activity with a capstone group presentation to develop foundational knowledge, skills and behaviors in participants to recognize mental health and disorders, learn about mental health careers, and obtain Teen Mental Health First Aid certification. High school-aged participants in the YMHA will be provided with a range of inquiry-based activities, immersive mentoring, and networking opportunities. Instructors are those who have mastered the basics of teaching high school students from diverse backgrounds, have expertise in facilitating groups to create a collaborative project, one who goes above and beyond to ensure a positive learning experience for each student, and one who shares his or her knowledge with other instructors and facilitators.

The Summer Teacher will ensure that all classroom learning experiences stimulate students’ interests in science, health and prepare them for college, careers, and citizenship. They will ensure that the curriculum is delivered as designed and students develop an in-depth understanding of content and develop key skills— communication, collaboration, inquiry, problem solving, and flexibility—that will serve them throughout their educational and professional lives. Lead teachers are expected to demonstrate teaching methods consistent with contemporary research and standards of excellence.

Reporting to the Learning Manager, this is an eight-week contracted position based in Los Angeles.

Responsibilities:

  • Model high-quality instruction, inquiry -based and reflective practice
  • Engage students in problem-solving experiences and inquiry practices
  • Facilitate student cooperative groups
  • Support their colleagues through focused mentoring or coaching, structured and collaborative teacher teams
  • Facilitate students’ proficiency in academic standards through long-term planning, daily and weekly lesson plans, and execution of rigorous and engaging daily instruction
  • Build positive classroom culture through fostering student relationships and utilization of classroom management techniques
  • Consistently integrate coaching feedback
  • Instructors take primary responsibility for content areas
  • Model the teaching of special units or special content
  • Review assessments and reflect together on the effectiveness of lessons, initiate instruction and share ideas
  • Explicitly share with students’ theories or research on which they base their teaching
  • Engage in problem-solving conversations and guide the instructional team in the use of specific student assessments and student performance data as appropriate
  • Provide both appropriate positive reinforcement and specific feedback, including suggestions for alternative approaches where appropriate. Constructive criticism should be delivered in a professional manner and in private

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Valid California State Teaching Credential or equivalent and transferable teaching license from another state (Intern credential accepted)
  • At least three years of experience teaching diverse, high school aged students in a school or community setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Strong organizational skills
  • A passion for working with schools, students, parents, and educators

Special Considerations:
Must be able to participate in professional development June 5th-June 16th, 2023, to internalize curriculum and obtain certification in Youth Mental Health First Aid before the summer academy starts.

The hourly rate for this position is $40.00 per hour.
