Job Summary:


Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

In addition to home departments, advisors in L&S are a part of an active advising community and interdependent system. During the academic year, L&S advisors meet monthly as a consortium for information sharing and ongoing training. All L&S advisors also contribute to the campus Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program, for a couple weeks in summer and a few days in January, to advise new L&S first-year and transfer students.


Responsibilities:

Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
  • 10% Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • 50% Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • 10% Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • 5% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • 10% Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • 10% Proactively engages students as needed
  • 5% Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college

Education:


Preferred
Bachelor's Degree in statistics, data science, computer sciences, math, engineering, science, counseling, educational administration, educational psychology, curriculum and instruction, higher education, information science, or related field.


Qualifications:


Prior experience in college/university student services, administrative employment, college/university teaching, and/or graduate education required, as are the following qualities:
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a student-focused approach.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with a strong attention to detail.
  • A collegial style, with the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students across campus.
  • Commitment to student diversity and inclusivity.
  • Professional written and oral communication skills; ability to organize and communicate complex information effectively.
  • Experience working in Microsoft Outlook and Excel, Zoom, Google Documents, and web-based software.
  • Knowledge, education, or professional experience with Statistics, Data Science, and/or related fields is a plus.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
