Responsibilities


GENERAL PURPOSE:

Provides comprehensive patient care related to patient evaluation, prescription recommendation, design and material selection of all assistive devices, fitting and adapting of all assistive devices, and coordination of patient care with other health care professionals, with emphasis on custom devices.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general direction and with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative:

Clinical Assessment

  • Develops treatment protocols for patients. Obtains history of the patient by interview and review of available records in order to determine the need for a specific device. Evaluates the patient visually and manually in order to determine the condition, range of motion and muscular strength. Determines the needs of the patient in order to provide an appropriate and realistic prescription. Provides information to the patient, family and involved health professionals regarding potential advantages and disadvantages of a device. Analyzes the data obtained by empirical methods in order to prepare a recommendation.

Patient Management

  • Develops the solution to a patient’s prosthetic/orthotic problem by appropriate evaluation in order to achieve proper function. Conducts continuing periodic evaluations. Replicates the patient’s body or body segments in order to provide an accurate anatomical impression to be used in fabrication of an orthotic or prosthetic device. Demonstrates a proper fitting prosthetic/orthotic design by utilizing accepted prosthetic/orthotic techniques in order to achieve optimum fit, function and cosmesis. Evaluates optimum prosthetic or orthotic function. Evaluates the saggital, transverse and coronal planes in order to provide maximum function.

Technical Implementation

  • Interprets data on measurement forms by reviewing numerical values in order to determine appropriate procedures. Modifies patient model by making necessary rectification’s in order to ensure a proper fit. Designs and fabricates prescribed custom devices by assembling selected materials in order to prepare for fitting. Evaluates a device to identify deviations from prescribed standards in order to correct impaired fit and function.
  • Establishes inspection system to assess systematically the appropriateness of technical procedures at various stages in order to reduce product deficiencies. Establishes sound safety protocols for personnel use of appropriate lab materials and machinery in order to achieve maximum safety.

Practice Management

  • Liaison with appropriate health care providers in the communication of prosthetic/orthotic evaluation in order to achieve ultimate patient care.
  • Communicates roles and expectations of facility employees. Trains and mentors lower classified staff.
  • Establishes procedures for patient care that comply with accepted medical/legal requirements.
  • Keeps abreast of trends as they pertain to the Orthotics and Prosthetics field by membership in professional organizations; attending meetings, workshops, and seminars; and receiving and reviewing professional literature.


REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in Orthotics and/or Prosthetics, certified by American Board of Certification (ABC) for Orthotics and Prosthetics and currently a member in good standing with ABC; or Bachelor’s degree in any discipline and Orthotics/Prosthetics certificate from an approved NCOPE (National Commission on Orthotics and Prosthetics Education) program; and 1 year clinical experience supervised by an ABC certified practitioner. Graduate level coursework in Orthotics and/or Prosthetics preferred.
