The role: Staff Electrical Engineer - Robotics
As a key member of our Hardware team, you’ll be contributing to the design and development of our current and next generation robotics system. The Staff Electrical Engineer is responsible for defining the architecture, design and development of our electronics and electrical devices and equipment. Definition of communication protocols between individual sensors and devices. Verification and validation testing for safety and reliability. Support manufacturer of these devices, systems, and equipment applying DFM and DFA principles in collaboration with suppliers.
What you'll do
- Define the electrical architecture of our entire systems from component level to complete system.
- Drive trade-offs across engineering, product, manufacturing, and other departments toward the design and development of complex surgical robotics arms.
- Drive designs from ideation to manufacturing.
- Rapidly develop and iterate full-scale prototypes of candidate architectures to satisfy requirements
- Review and validate board design for the whole team.
- Mentor to junior team members. Exemplifies and coaches design methodologies (e.g. DFM, DFA), development processes, and tools.
- Lead problem solving and troubleshooting efforts. Supervises root-cause determination and issue resolution based upon field reports and other quality system data.
- Improves product quality by designing electrical testing methods
- Execution of root-cause determination and troubleshooting following product reports.
- Maintain effective communications with supervisor and peers in daily activities.
- Follow all applicable Quality and Safety procedures and Good Documentation Practices (GDP)
- Ensures that all activities are carried out within regulations and laws governing business and quality operations
- Actively contributes to building new intellectual property and supports the patent process.
What you'll bring
- BS or higher degree Electrical Engineering plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated experience with electronic design for embedded motor control
- Demonstrated Experience with mixed-signal electronic design for precise sensing
- Knowledge of analog and digital design.
- Proficient in Schematic design, PCB layout, PCBs bring-up and prototyping, DfM and DfA.
- Proficient in the use of electrical design CAD tools (preferably Altium).
- Demonstrated experience working with motors, encoders and other sensors.
- Working knowledge of embedded electronic design including ASIC, FPGA, micro-controllers.
- Working knowledge of EMI/EMC and electrical safety.
- Proficient with embedded firmware development.
- Proven experience interfacing with and managing external resources, e.g suppliers, OEMs.
- Proficient in use of and maintaining laboratory equipment (power supply, oscilloscope, multimeter, solder station, signal generator)
- Self-starter with excellent teamwork and communication skills.
Nice to have
- Working knowledge of quality design standards (UL, IEC, IEEE) preferred
- Experience with the following regulations preferred:
- FDA 21 CFR Part 820 – FDA Quality System Regulation
- IEC 60601-1 – Safety standard for electro-medical devices
- ISO 13485 -Medical Devices Quality Management Systems – Requirements for Regulatory Purposes

- This is not a supervisory role
- The position will require up to 10% travel in and out of state

- This position requires the regular use of office and role specific equipment
- Prolonged periods working on a computer
