Job Duties

VDOT’s Northern Virginia Materials Section is seeking a qualified individual to perform professional and high quality pavement and geotechnical designs as well as to provide construction engineering support and consultation for agency, local government, and consultant personnel as it relates to materials.
Perform preliminary engineering designs including but not limited to pavement and geotechnical fields; and coordinate field operations.
Respond to materials-related problems and questions from construction and maintenance staff. Visit construction projects to review site, evaluate problems, and provide recommendations, as well as to give guidance and instruction to field staff.
Participate in partnering meetings.
Provide advice to engineering staff in resolution of critical project design issues.
Perform detailed Preliminary Engineering reviews of design documents and plans, as well as attend meetings to present recommendations.
Complete written documentation of recommendations and reports.
Review geotechnical reports for completeness; develop geotechnical/pavement investigation programs in accordance with standards; coordinate field operations; may provide oversight for contract drillers; assemble boring logs/geotechnical plan sheets.
Provide designs and recommendations for pavements and structures, foundations, slopes, subgrades, and other earthwork based upon analysis of soils, cost and traffic data.
Develop contract specifications and special provisions.
Serve as technical expert for slope stability analysis and field instrumentation (inclinometers).

Minimum Qualifications

Valid Professional Engineer's license.
Experience applying geotechnical, materials and civil engineering principles and practices related to highway design, construction and maintenance.
Experience in construction materials to include acceptance, testing procedures, production, installation, quality assurance and quality control.
Experience with performing pavement analysis and design, soil and paving materials testing methods, and VDOT materials standards and specifications.
Knowledge of geotechnical principles and practice.
Ability to provide technical guidance and instruction to others.
Ability to apply statistical concepts in sampling and testing materials and in analyzing data. Ability to read and understand engineering plans.
Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
Effective written and oral communication and presentation skills.
Experience in geotechnical engineering principles and practices.
Experience with performing pavement analysis/design.
Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

College degree in civil engineering, materials engineering or related field preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for degree.
Progressively responsible experience in geotechnical and construction engineering or pavement design.

Professional Engineer License record check will be conducted.
A valid Professional Engineer License in Virginia or eligible for transfer to Virginia.

Employees in this position may be required to work on projects located anywhere within the geographic District (Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and Arlington Counties, and City of Alexandria) during the course of their employment.

Safety shoes and other personal protective equipment are required in the performance of duties. Position requires unrestricted mobility, including, at times, unrestricted mobility in irregular terrain; working at heights and in confined spaces, making visual observations; the ability to stand for long periods of time; the ability to work in a variety of environments affected by, but not limited to, such elements as dust, vapors, heat, and moisture; and the ability to lift 50 lbs.
Valid Driver’s License required. Fingerprint based background check, references, work history, and DMV records check will be verified prior to employment. Work schedule varies according to job assignments and/or contractors schedule, to include significant night work, weekends, and holidays.
All employees are required to work in severe weather and other emergency situations, to include weekends, holidays, and outside normal work hours; assignments may vary based on business needs.
