The Cell Therapy Platform and Discovery team within the Therapeutics Discovery (TD) division of Janssen R&D is engaged in the research and development of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-directed autologous and allogeneic cell therapies. This position offers the opportunity for the scientist to apply their assay automation expertise to the bustling cell therapy research field and identify mechanisms of optimal cell therapy performance, CAR design optimization, non-viral transgene delivery, gene editing, high throughput screening and viral engineering in addition to engaging in the discovery and evaluation of next generation cell therapy technologies. The Senior Associate Scientist will be required to drive, enable and accelerate research and development in these areas.
The Senior Associate Scientist will work as part of a collaborative team of inventive scientists to:
- Partner with other scientists from multiple Cell Therapy Platform Discovery research teams to miniaturize and transition assays from manual to automated format.
- Develop, troubleshoot and validate laboratory automation procedures for a wide variety of functional assays on machinery including the Biomek i7 liquid handling workstation, Integra Viaflow-384 and ASSIST Plus, Formulatrix Mantis, BioTek plate washer and Thermo Spinnaker robot arm.
- Operate, validate and optimize assays on integrated robotic arm platforms.
- Develop streamlined software templates for assay data processing, QC, and data visualization using programs such as Spotfire, Microsoft VBA/Macros, GraphPad PRISM scripting and in-house database tools.
- Establish SOPs for hardware and assays, training colleagues, identifying new CapEx hardware investment opportunities, and coordinating new laboratory technology evaluations.
- Support therapeutic discovery program needs, perform established biological assays, cell culture maintenance, data reporting and presentation, and laboratory space management
- Carefully document all work in an electronic laboratory notebook meeting the Discovery Data Integrity standards at Janssen.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a B.S. or M.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Biotechnology, Mechanical engineering, or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of high-throughput laboratory experience is required.
- Proficient knowledge of cellular/molecular biology and common biology laboratory assays and data analysis techniques is required.
- A strong interest and experience in promoting laboratory automation and data informatics is required.
- High-throughput assay experience with mammalian cells is required.
- Experience operating integrated robotic platforms is preferred.
- Experience in specific machines and software programs listed or computer programming is beneficial but not required.
- Previous experience in cell therapy technologies is not required.
- Strong written and verbal communication and excellent interpersonal skills
