Compensation

Hourly Pay Rate: $15.75

Position Summary: Intake Representative

This position serves as the first level of contact for individuals who feel they have a complaint of discrimination in employment, housing, or public accommodations under the Kansas Act Against Discrimination and/or the Kansas Age Discrimination in Employment Act. Assists individuals throughout the intake and complaint filing process. Employment cases may also be dual-filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and/or other applicable federal statutes.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Interviews individuals via telephone or in person to establish jurisdiction and assist them in filing a complaint.
  • Reviews and analyzes large quantities of information, answers questions, writes correspondence, and drafts the complaint.
  • Explains filing process, statutes, regulations, and policies.
  • Ensures all KHRC written complaints are drafted correctly and proper correspondence is prepared and sent regarding filing complaints with the Kansas Human Rights Commission.
  • Spends significant amounts of time on the telephone and computer.
  • Provides a high level of service by coordinating and prioritizing a complex workload with multiple duties and concurrent deadlines.
  • Coordinates complaints with the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and referral of complaints to Kansas Legal Services.
  • Enters data in Microsoft Access databases.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Occasionally assists individuals who are emotionally sensitive due to their own situation.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent AND:

  • one year experience in human resources, public or business administration, criminal justice or law, communications, psychology or social work, OR
  • one year investigating, fact finding or enforcing state or federal laws and regulations.

Education in communications, psychology, social work, public or business administration, criminal justice or law may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Licensing & Certification:

Must be able to qualify as a Kansas Notary Public.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training or experience in State and Federal anti-discrimination laws, specifically the Kansas Act Against Discrimination, the Kansas Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and/or other applicable federal statutes.
  • One year of experience in interviewing individuals is preferred.
  • One year experience in reading, interpreting and applying regulations/or statutes is preferred.
  • Ability to review, analyze, and summarize large quantities of written information.
  • Ability to compose, proofread and edit correspondence and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with appropriate tone and content.
  • Ability to recognize and fix errors without direction.
  • Ability to handle stress and work occasionally with agitated people in a calm and professional manner.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and multi-tasking with multiple complaints.
  • Ability to develop positive strategies to meet goals and objectives.
  • Ability to accept directions in a cooperative manner.
  • Proficiency in word processing and e-mail software, specifically Microsoft Office Word, Outlook, and Access.
  • Prefer bi-lingual speaking, writing, and reading ability in Spanish.

Post Offer Requirement:

Tax Clearance Certificate. The successful applicant (even non-residents) must obtain a valid Kansas Certificate of Tax Clearance by accessing the Kansas Department of Revenue's website within 10 days of the date the applicant has been offered the employment position. A Tax Clearance is a comprehensive tax account review to determine and ensure that an individual's account is compliant with all primary Kansas Tax Laws. A Tax Clearance expires every 90 days.
