Job description

The City of Valdez, Solid Waste Department is currently accepting applications for two Solid Waste Laborer positions. Under the general supervision of the Solid Waste Manager, operates some equipment to collect, transport, and dispose of refuse and trash, and operates within the baler facility and at the landfill as needed.

The range of pay is $22.68-$24.54 DOE, per hour, 37.5 hours per week. Must be 18 years of age or older. Must have a valid Alaska Driver's License, CDL a plus.

Positions are open until filled, review of applications begins May 10, 2023.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Operates equipment and other machinery in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
• Assists Solid waste Technicians with baler operation
• Assists Solid waste Technicians with proper disposal of hazardous waste and recyclable materials.
• Maintains required forms, maintenance record and daily trip reports.
• Assists with inspection, cleaning, maintenance of vehicles.
• Complies with all safety rules and regulations.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

Knowledge of:

• Department operations, policies and procedures.
• Traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in heavy equipment operation.

Skill in:

• The safe operation of equipment and vehicles.
• Following work instructions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, materials and airborne and blood borne pathogens, and frequent walking, bending and lifting. Employee may be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be 18 years of age possess and maintain a valid drivers license. Will be required to undergo driving history check to ensure insurability through the City of Valdez insurance carrier.
