Engineering managers ensure that a group of engineers reliably delivers quality work in a timely manner. Engineering managers are ideally a mix of both player and coach – that is, they are individual contributors as well as personnel managers. Often, the manager functions as a technical product owner for their codebase, working to reduce technical debt and position the team for rapid response to future customer needs. Managers are technically proficient and aren’t afraid to get into the trenches of day-to-day development work. They delegate work often, giving their reports opportunities to grow and excel. They direct individual performance and compensation reviews, and they are ultimately responsible for the culture of grateful excellence that we expect of Lightcast engineering teams.
Primary Responsibilities:
Contributes to their team’s sprint work.
Mentors and leads individuals into productive patterns of growth.
Continuously improves their team’s process through experimentation and reflection.
Creates clarity for product owners and engineers when defining requirements.
Contributes to the technical vision and execution of the team, bringing tech to bear on customer problems.
Performs the HR functions of a manager, including quarterly performance and compensation reviews.
Adhere to Company’s core values.
Create and cultivate a culture of grateful excellence on their team.
Facilitate and plan team events and celebrations.
Experience and Education:
For web development teams, experience building production web applications is required:
3 years of experience with React development in a production environment.
3 years of experience with server-side languages used in the department (e.g., Node, Python, PHP).
3 years of experience with production environments in AWS (or similar)
Experience with structured databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
Preferred:
Extensive experience with container orchestration and tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
5 years or more experience in all the above.
2 years or more spent managing production codebases at scale.
Experience leading teams of individuals.
