We are looking for engineers who want to make a lasting impact on our enterprise-grade database offerings for the next generation MPP open source database VMWare Greenplum.
Greenplum Kernel R&D group is responsible for the database server components. Our team develops components ranging from distributed storage, memory and concurrency management, HA/replication, data protection and disaster recovery. As a developer on this team, you will be designing and building large-scale fault-tolerant distributed system components for the database, and you will continue to scale and optimize for performance to stay cutting edge.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

• You have gained enough familiarity with the code base to start driving feature development in one or more components.

• Participate in code reviews and provide knowledgeable feedback on topics such as code quality and test coverage.

• You will begin to participate in cross-team and open source technical discussions in certain areas in the database domain.

• You are able to collaborate with support teams as an R&D representative to help triage/debug customer issues.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

• Work on database components and/or internals in areas including storage, fault tolerance, distributed transaction and memory management

• You will gain a strong grasp of operating systems concepts including multi-threading, memory modeling, IPC, etc.

• Work closely with other teams to provide subject matter expertise

• Engage with gpdb and possibly postgres developer community

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

We work as a distributed team with colleagues in China, across the United States and India. The team is currently composed of several sub-teams of engineers focusing on different parts of the greenplum server components. The manager Shivram Mani, has been with Greenplum for more than 10 years and has works and manages the Greenplum Kernel group. Prior to that he has contributed to areas including data federation (gpdb and hadoop ecosystem) and search engine federation, metrics and analytics with his previous stints with Yahoo and Google.

We value collaboration and start our days with daily stand ups where requests for help within or across teams are discussed, besides identifying plans for the day. New members in the team will pair with member(s) in the team as part of the on-boarding process to allow them to get comfortable with the code base and the domain. Members often schedule knowledge sharing or technical review sessions on a regular basis. It is also important to us to make time to check in on the team’s overall well-being, this is done by having retro sessions to review the past week's events, regular 1:1s with your engineering manager and periodic team health checks.

Where is this role located?
Remote: This role is fully remote, allowing you the flexibility to work from the location you feel most productive and comfortable, or the location agreed upon with your hiring manager. You will be expected to live within a number of time zones from your team as defined by your business.
