SLF Ambulance Operator- Bishop, CA
Position Summary:
The Sierra Life Flight Ambulance Operator provides customer oriented, high-quality patient transport in a safe and efficient manner. In collaboration with a licensed clinical team member, the Ambulance Operator is responsible for the ground transportation of sick or injured patients from a sending hospital facility to the Sierra Life Flight clinical teams at our Airport Hangar facility in preparation for air transportation services. In every situation, the Ambulance Operator does what is right for the patient based on direct instruction from accompanying clinical team members and company protocols. The Ambulance Operator must obtain their California Ambulance Drivers certificate within two weeks of starting and will be required to obtain their EMT-B certification within 1 year.

The Ambulance Operator duties are performed in indoor and outdoor environments. The Ambulance Operator may be exposed to routine office noises, moderate electrical or mechanical hazards.

Work Place Conditions:
Incumbent can base at home if they reside within 10 miles of the Sierra Life Flight Hangar facility. If employee does not live locally, they may utilize "crew quarters" for 24/48 hour shifts and must be prepared at a moment's notice (within 2 minutes) to begin ambulance missions lasting from ½ hour to 4 hours in duration. The crew quarters are equipped with kitchen, shower, rest and sleeping facilities.
Work Schedule:
The current standard shift at Sierra Life Flight for ground crewmembers is 10 rotating 24-hour shifts per month. Sometimes a shift may extend past 24 hours.
Reporting Relationship:
The Ambulance Operator reports directly to Program Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Delivers customer oriented, high quality care to each patient throughout the transport process.
- Provides safe, orderly and efficient transport of the patient(s) (per DOT/State/Company rules) to destination while constantly monitoring the patient(s) and/or surroundings and providing any appropriate continuing care within the scope of license/certification.
- Is capable of performing basic life saving techniques per scope of position and under the direct guidance of relevant clinical team members.
- Participates in training sessions and attends classes in emergency medical treatment and related subjects.
- In the absence of other qualified personnel, controls the emergency scene, including parking the vehicle in such a way as to minimize further danger in the roadway as well as controlling the actions of bystanders.
- Obtains information regarding the transport from dispatch or on duty crew chief, and collaborates with other service personnel as needed during the call.
- In the absence of, or as directed by more qualified personnel, communicates with relevant team members for patient pick up or transport status changes.
- Obtains and records information for the Company as well as those required by medical, legal, and health authorities.
- Will make daily checks of the vehicle equipment and systems and completes manifest and other reports/forms as required.
- Reports needed equipment and vehicle repairs to Field Supervisor and Maintenance Personnel.
- Respects and holds in confidence all information obtained in the course of professional work unless required by law to divulge such information, in accordance with relevant PII and HIPPA regulations.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, either/or orally or writing.
Job Requirements and Qualifications:
Qualifications
- High School diploma
- Must hold and maintain a current valid California Driver's License.
- Required to obtain/maintain a California Ambulance Driver Certificate within 14 days of hire.
- Ability to obtain/maintain a current, unrestricted EMT-B license in the State of practice. (California position: must possess California EMT-B license with 1 year of date of hire.)
- Must obtain local EMS accreditation in all counties worked in (when appropriate) after 1 year
Requirements
- Must be 21 years of age.

- Remains cognizant of local EMS county protocols and requirements.
- Participates in public relation events and safety in-services.
- Considerable knowledge of company ambulance operations, tools, equipment and their proper use.
- Presents a professional image (on and off duty) as a Sierra Life Flight team member.
- Maintains a positive team attitude with law enforcement, fire-rescue, hospital staff, and co-workers by working cohesively.
- Has the ability to work independently and tolerate high stress levels while maintaining a good rapport with co-workers.
Physical Requirements:
- Requires activities requiring a moderate amount of standing, sitting, and walking.
- Able to conduct activities requiring a moderate to rigorous amount of static pushing, pulling, reaching and lifting (knuckle height and ankle height).
- Capable of lifting 75lbs floor to bench height.
- Ability to lift and carry patient over rough or uneven terrain.
- Ability to bend, strain, stretch, contort, push, pull, twist, carry, walk with weight, or lift to remove a victim from a motor vehicle and place the victim on a stretcher.
- Ability to drive an ambulance during both day and night, using depth perception and peripheral vision in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of the posted limits, in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow.
- Ability to complete EMS and emergency rescue functions and tasks that are physically demanding.
- Ability to respond to an alarm, wake and go from a sound sleep to full activity and exertion within a matter of minutes.
- Ability to hear and orally respond to verbal orders, calls for assistance and radio communications
- Ability to prepare incident reports and medical reports, either by hand or computer, using proper detailed descriptions and appropriate grammar.
- Ability to work within a 24-48 hour job environment.

- Leather or Nomex boots
- PPE - latex gloves, goggles, and HEPA mask
