Position Purpose
To serve as an operational partner to the Executive Director of the Dartmouth College Fund (DCF) in meeting the goals of a $44m annual fund and increasing alumni participation through fundraising efforts. To provide leadership, strategic direction, and oversight of an integrated operations plan for marketing, stewardship, and information management systems.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree required with ten or more years of experience in higher education fund raising administration or a complex development operation, or the equivalent
  • Leadership, operational management, and organizational skills
  • Experience in developing annual giving, marketing, or communication strategies; experience with digital marketing and social media
  • Staff management experience
  • Maturity, intelligence, and professionalism that earn the respect of senior officers of the College, colleagues, volunteers and donors
  • Demonstrated analytical and strategic thinking capabilities; proven skills as a strategist, understanding the big picture and linking research findings to business implications, ensuring utilization of insights in decision making; market intelligence/market research experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving, planning, and interpersonal skills; perceptive and diplomatic
  • Self-motivated; ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Demonstrated initiative; goal and results oriented
  • Sensitivity to the needs, attitudes and situations of donors and volunteers
  • Ability to work as part of multiple teams as well as working independently on projects with minimal supervision
  • Innovative, tenacious and a willingness to explore new approaches to achieve bold, dramatic growth in the Fund
  • Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community
  • Technical literacy; strong experience with desktop and database applications
  • Consummate project manager with budget management experience
  • Strong knowledge of information systems, and business analysis of complex information systems experience preferred; demonstrated ability to seek and strategically employ new technology to achieve goals
  • Broad knowledge of the relative value of all communication channels

Key Accountabilities

Description
Oversees the development and execution of an integrated marketing strategy and operating plan to convey the case for support of the DCF through a combination of direct mail, email, social media and other printed and electronic digital promotional and advertising sites and materials to achieve a significant increase in dollars and donors. Manages an annual operating expense budget across key accountabilities in excess of $580,000 and develops budgets that align with Advancement’s strategic priorities.

Project management of high impact appeals and challenges, process development, workflow analysis and policy development. Provides leadership for ongoing comprehensive marketing that will enhance the visibility of the College to its key constituents. Hires vendors, freelance creative professionals, and partners with Advancement marketing colleagues. Collaboration with Class Managing Directors to execute on class-specific marketing pieces. Sets quality standards for formalizing operations.

Oversees the tracking and analysis of all direct mail solicitation results, reports progress and/or adverse trends. Studies, recommends, and implements new marketing techniques to improve overall annual giving results and to increasing average annual gifts. Incorporates the needs of diverse populations in program planning.

Manages relationships with, and provides strategic direction to, internal and external marketing, research, and systems to conduct market research (benchmarking, surveys, focus groups, etc.) and enhance support systems to achieve business goals. Serves on ad-hoc committees and project groups at the request of the Executive Director; reports results and findings and advises ways to integrate new practices into the existing business model

Coordinates stewardship strategic plan and execution of stewardship initiatives for various recognition societies and donor segments within the DCF. Partners with, and provides direction to, stewardship activities of DCF staff, Donor Engagement and Stewardship office related to Dartmouth College Fund fundraising.

Manages marketing team staff. Supervises, evaluates, hires and trains staff to meet changing department needs. Sets quality standards for formalizing operations; project tracking, benchmarks, workflow analysis, and policy/procedural documentation. Serves as a premier business analyst/consultant to staff, guiding them in the development of workable solutions, and maintaining staff focus and motivation in an environment with shifting priorities and unanticipated changes based on environmental factors.
