Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions has the privilege and responsibility of being the primary point of contact for students seeking admission to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as undergraduates. In its role evaluating first-year and transfer students, the office works tirelessly to identify, recruit, admit, and welcome students who will positively contribute to our campus, state, and nation. The office also supports students by providing academic counseling, sponsors hundreds of events encouraging students to further their education, and works to enhance the image of the University locally and nationally. Members of the office understand that their work is intensely public and is closely followed by students and their families; secondary-school teachers and administrators; University faculty and staff; lawmakers; and media.

Position Summary
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a hard-working, caring, and collaborative professional to serve as a Senior Assistant Director for Community Outreach and Admissions for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The position will supervise five Assistant Directors for Community Outreach and Admissions who are serving as active members of communities across North Carolina.

The Senior Assistant Director will plan, lead, support, and evaluate the work of the Assistant Directors for Community Outreach and Admissions, which includes collaborating with local districts, schools, counties, the Carolina College Advising Corps, and community-based organizations; participating in school and local events; counseling students, parents, and high school counselors about financial aid and admission to Carolina; and partnering with others to develop and implement innovative methods of recruiting, evaluating, and enrolling talented and diverse students from the five communities and surrounding areas. The Senior Assistant Director will read admissions applications and serve as a voting member of the admissions committee. This position will support the University’s mission of enriching the lives of the people of North Carolina.

This position reports to the Senior Associate Director for Recruitment in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The candidate will be required to travel regularly to meet with the Assistant Directors for Community Outreach and Admissions and participate in recruitment and other initiatives in their communities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to supervise staff; plan, lead, and collaborate with others; think critically and strategically; care for students, families, and other constituents; identify and assess opportunities to recruit students and form partnerships; and speak and write clearly and persuasively. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to Carolina’s mission, a keen interest in the identification and recruitment of a diverse and exceptionally talented student body, and an ability to work effectively with colleagues who have diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
At least 3 years of experience in admissions, recruitment, student aid, college access, education, or a related field are required. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills. Requires critical thinking, sound judgment, creativity, and a passion to help students overcome obstacles and realize their college-going potential. Strong writing, public speaking, and presentation skills. Ability to work with both students and adults in a professional and courteous manner.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Supervisory experience is preferred. Familiarity with the counties served and proficiency in a second language, especially Spanish, are also preferred.
