Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.

In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.

Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Seasonal Agricultural Worker for the Rutgers Gardens. The Seasonal Agricultural Worker will support the Farm Manager and Field Crew Leader.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Field Maintenance includes, but not limited to, mowing, trimming, and vine removal.
  • Crop Management includes, but not limited to, seeding, watering, transplanting, fertilizing, composting, pruning, mulching, pest and disease control, trellising, harvesting, and processing.
  • Assists in farm projects as necessary. Including, but not limited to, farm infrastructure, expansion, and other generalized plant care and landscape maintenance tasks to be completed in an outdoor and/or greenhouse setting.
  • Assists in the preparation, setup, operation, and clean-up of the Rutgers Gardens Student Farm vendor booth at the weekly Cook’s Market farmers market.
  • Assists in the documentation of crop production, management, and sales as requested by the Farm Manager.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent experience.
  • Requires a minimum 3 years of experience working on a small-scale diversified vegetable farm.

Certifications/Licenses

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a university setting is also preferred.
  • Experience with organic, no-till production systems is strongly preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have strong observational, time management, and attention to detail skills.
  • Must have the ability to independently follow instructions and willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Must be willing and able to switch tasks as needed to help accomplish the goals of the Rutgers Gardens Student Farm.
  • Must have the ability to read, write and speak English.

Equipment Utilized
  • Mowers, String trimmers, Wood chipper, Tractor, Dump truck, etc.


Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.

Special Conditions
  • Must be available to work weekends and/or hours outside of a traditional workday (including early morning and/or evening hours) as scheduled.
  • This position requires drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal law.
