Director of Business Services, Cancer Clinical Research
The Stanford Cancer Institute’s (SCI) Cancer Clinical Trials Office (CCTO) provides administrative and clinical operations, and an extensive portfolio of business services, for cancer clinical research conducted across Stanford Medicine. The new Director of Business Services (DOBS) for Cancer Clinical Research is a senior leader who will serve as a trusted colleague and financial business partner to administrative and program leaders within the SCI and the SCI-CCTO, and with faculty and administrative leaders across Stanford Medicine. The Director provides financial strategic planning and leadership for the complex business services integral to cancer clinical research, as well as directs and oversees all financial activities and business services within the SCI-CCTO including but not limited to long-range forecasting, general accounting, cost accounting, budget formulation and projection, invoicing, pre and post-award activities, and research billing, policy translation and implementation.
The DOBS leads and develops the dedicated SCI-CCTO business services and finance team by providing expert personnel management and by establishing and executing operational structure, direction, accountability, and standard operating procedures. The Director builds and fosters a culture of process development and improvement, standardization, compliance, and efficient financial management across the broad spectrum of cancer clinical research. Business services of the SCI-CCTO are provided in alignment with its central business unit, the SCI, and DOBS works closely with the senior financial leaders of the SCI.

The SCI earned its most recent comprehensive cancer center designation by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 2022 and is only one of 52 cancer centers in the country to earn this distinction from the NCI. The SCI is a prominent, growing and complex Institute within Stanford Medicine. Cancer clinical research is integrated throughout Stanford Medicine which is comprised of Stanford School of Medicine and our adult and pediatric health systems – Stanford Health Care and Stanford Children’s Health. Job Responsibilities:
- Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, professional development and accountable for the performance of direct reports.
- May independently or in collaboration with human resources managers, guide supervisors in the interpretation and implementation of human resources policies, procedures and programs.
- Develop and direct strategic plans for organization or program(s) managed. May develop multi-year business plans. Identify and resolve strategic issues of substantial significance that affect the overall functioning beyond the immediate unit, consult and advise senior leadership. Make decisions that establish objectives for the overall direction/operation of a significant organization. Oversee allocation of all resources.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the organizational structure and programs to ensure success, development of employees and appropriate use of staff resources
- Responsible for the financial viability and success of the organization, including long term planning.
- Advise senior management on programmatic and policy development. May provide input to university leadership on institutional administrative policies and guidelines.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced degree in finance, business administration, or related field
Demonstrated leadership experience in oncology, health care finance, and or clinical trials business services
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of cancer clinical research business services
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, planning and change management skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to influence people, solve problems, trouble shoot, think creatively and resolve conflicts.
- Advanced financial expertise in budget planning, and financial forecasting.
- Advanced analytical and problem solving skills Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or regulatory requirements.
- Subject matter expertise for area(s) of responsibility.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Frequently sitting.
- Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds;
- Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position is $179,000 to $233,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
