Overview:
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is accepting applications for a Skilled Craft Supervisor. Under limited supervision, incumbent will coordinate, plan, and schedule work within the Roads & Grounds work group. They will team with the craft workers and other support personnel in task preparation and planning to ensure that work is conducted in a safe, compliant, timely and efficient manner. Craft Supervisors work closely with research and support organizations to meet their needs promptly and cost effectively. The Supervisor is responsible for the generation and review of technical procedures and training of assigned craft. This position is primarily supervising Roads & Grounds activities, but the incumbent may be called on to supervise other craft work, as needed.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- As a member of the Logistical Services Roads & Grounds team, the Supervisor is expected to promote and maintain a business culture that focuses on meeting the needs of the craft, research and maintenance personnel.
- Serve in an important customer interface role to ensure that customers are fully informed about Roads & Grounds activities to include: Turf maintenance, landscape and irrigation maintenance, tree trimming/felling, paved/unpaved road maintenance (paving, pothole repair, striping, etc.), herbicide/pesticide applications, sidewalk maintenance, snow & ice removal, installation of traffic and way-finding signage, right of way clearing, creating & updating various R&G condition assessments, reading/aiding in landscape design (using native plants), landscape installation, etc. Field supervision of these tasks is expected.
- The Supervisor will ensure that work tasks are properly analyzed and graded according to ORNL work control procedures. They will assist in developing cost estimates, work plans, excavation permits and schedules for projects; and manage projects within established budgets and schedules.
- Provide support, as appropriate, to craft workers as they perform work. The Supervisor must ensure that all roads & grounds activities are conducted in total compliance with the governing DOE Standard. The Supervisor will work closely with their counterparts within the division to support administrative function, training needs, timekeeping, workforce instruction & direction, performance evaluation and feedback, efficiency improvements, etc. in support of the division agenda.
- This position will be involved with committees, such as the ORNL Landscape Review Committee. The Supervisor will also be required to be on site during inclement weather events to supervise snow/ice removal activities.

Qualifications Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Design, Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Agricultural Business, Civil Engineering, along with at least 5 years’ experience performing roads & grounds maintenance activities, including “hands on”, planning and supervisory.
- Must have, or be able to obtain within 6 months, a Tennessee State Commercial Herbicide/Pesticide Applicator Certification (Category 3, Ornamental and Turf). This position will primarily plan and direct Roads & Grounds activities.
- Working knowledge of Roads & Grounds functions that include: Turf maintenance tasks, regionally native plant maintenance, paved/unpaved road maintenance, sidewalk/concrete pouring & maintenance, snow and ice removal techniques, etc.
- Working knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, SAP, etc.

- Must exercise sound judgment within the assigned scope of responsibility.
- Must be a team player.
- Must positively interact with a wide-variety of ORNL staff and clients at all levels and resolve and or advise management on a wide range of administrative and or technical issues.
- Excellent oral and written communications, interpersonal, and problem solving skills are required.

- Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
