Job Description:

Description: The RN Patient Placement Coordinator – Women & Infants (W&I) assesses W&I department patient admissions, transfers, discharges and inpatient bed availability. This job also develops, coordinates and implements plans for patient assignments and staffing which accommodate patient acuity needs and unit workload.

Typical Duties:

  • Demonstrates awareness of routine patient flow by facilitating and managing patient throughput in collaboration with Team Leads (TL), Nurses and Providers to ensure that patients are expeditiously moved into the appropriate level of care and location.

  • Works in collaboration with unit TLs to ensure adequate and appropriate staffing is available for safe patient care. Staffing concerns are elevated to PPC on off hours / weekends. Works with support departments to ensure quality services and adequate coverage.

  • Coordinates with Providers to prioritize scheduled and existing patients before, during and after determination of treatment needs.

  • Serves as the primary contact for all admissions including verification of completeness of orders and documentation related to admission and status orders, as well as all transfers (arranging in and out of facility/taking patients to different units).

  • Represents leadership with decisions and coordinates any patient flow issues in W & I throughout shift. Escalates any concerns to manager of unit/ director as needed.

  • Serves as primary contact for all calls from Emergency room, and responds to all RRT, STATS for OB, GYN & Off service patients in W & I area.

  • Coordinates assignments and care for all W&I patients that are located in other areas of the hospital (e.g. ICU, Telemetry, PCU) that require the specialized skills of an OB nurse.

  • Rounds on all W & I areas throughout shift.

  • Anticipates actual/potential problems that may occur on their shift and sets shift priorities accordingly.

  • Identifies barriers to the admission and discharge process and collaborates with the W&I Leadership Team to resolve them.

  • Serves as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems, handling complaints from patients, family, staff or providers on off hours/ weekends, and informing department leadership of any issues.

  • Maintains responsibility, authority and accountability for activities while on shift, keeping unit manager & director informed and supporting hospital and management policy, procedures, guidelines and decisions.

  • Contributes to achievement of the department’s metrics and goals.

  • Participates as a member of the W&I Leadership Team and attends leadership meetings as assigned including attendance of all Bed Control meetings and Safety Huddles.

  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.


Qualifications:


    Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school of professional nursing or enrolled in a BSN program
  • 2 plus years of W&I department experience
  • Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Master of Science degree or higher
  • 4 years’ experience in a W&I department unit
  • Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
  • Current licensure by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas or proof of reciprocity of licensure between the State of Texas and another state. Must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Current JPS recognized Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification with 6 month of employment.
  • Complete Neonatal Education Simulation Methodology (S.T.A.B.L.E.) within 6 months of employment and maintains certification throughout employment.
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and maintains credentialing throughout employment.
  • Preferred Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training
  • National certification related to W&I
  • AWHONN Fetal monitoring certification (required if clinical experience includes fetal monitoring.)
  • Basic EKG preferred
