The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Radiation Oncology is seeking a talented, highly motivated Research Assistant to join the multi-disciplinary laboratory of Dr. Joseph Caster. The Research Assistant works with the Principal Investigator and other scientists on preclinical studies involving drugs which manipulate redox metabolism for the treatment of cancer and other disorders. The research assistant will also be responsible for overseeing lab safety and working with environmental health and safety. Excellent oral and written communication and computer skills are necessary. Priority will be given to applicants with prior experience performing image-guided radiation in mice and/or treating cells and mice with redox-manipulating drugs such as pharmacological ascorbate or superoxide dismutase mimetics. This is a specified term position. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Duties to include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator of the research project.
  • Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare for research protocols.
  • Independently perform experiments (after appropriate training). Frequent activities will include:
    • Cell culture
    • Tumor cell transfection
    • Clonogenic survival assays
    • In vitro radiation
    • Flank xenograft implantation
    • Orthotopic rectal tumor implantation
    • In vivo tumor imaging and measurements
    • Image-guided tumor radiation
    • IV/IP drug treatments
    • Pelvic and abdominal organ harvest
    • Immunohistochemistry with fixed tissues
  • Collect and track data, perform data entry for reports and maintain records of methods used. Prepare materials for reports.
  • Analyze data including some basic statistical testing (T-testing, one-way ANOVAs, Kaplan-Meier Survival analyses).
  • Assist with IRB, ACURF or similar protocol submissions/modifications as needed. Track various indicators of project progress and summarize in reports to the research team.
  • Provide oversight of lab equipment and animal protocols; assist in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory and facility equipment.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Pharmaceutics, or an associated field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Sound independent judgment and competence in research methodologies
  • Strong analytical and computer skills required; Proficiency with computer spreadsheet, word-processing and database software.
  • Animal handling experience required.
  • Strong organizational skills required.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet established project timelines.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals from various backgrounds and fields of expertise.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with redox-active drugs such as pharmacological ascorbate or superoxide dismutase mimetics.
  • Experience delivering tumor-directed, image-guided radiation in mice.
  • Experience with in vivo tumor implantation (orthotopic or xenograft)
  • Experience performing IV tail vein injections in mice.
  • Experience with Prism GraphPad
  • Knowledge of UI policies and procedures and familiarity with UI entities.
