Position Description

Working as part of the Research and Instruction team, the Research and Instruction Librarian provides research services and assists and instructs users in the effective use of biomedical information resources and databases. The primary functions are to 1) support the educational missions of the Harvard Medical School, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and the Chan Harvard School of Public Health; 2) to support the research missions of these same institutions by providing research support and reference services over a broad range of subject domains.

The responsibilities of the Research and Instruction Librarian include:
Research Support
  • Provides support to Harvard faculty in producing high-quality, transparent systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and other literature-based forms of research. Support includes consulting in the development of research questions, choosing appropriate research designs, and designing and executing literature searches in a variety of electronic databases.
  • Provides reference assistance to Harvard-affiliated investigators as needed in the areas of biological sciences, clinical medicine, public health, and health and public health data resources
  • Keeps abreast of current developments in clinical research methods, evidence-based clinical practice, and medical education.

Education
  • Develops and implements educational programs in support of graduate programs at the Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and Chan School of Public Health. Subject matter includes evidence-based medicine, information discovery and retrieval, and evidence synthesis methods.
  • Serves as a liaison to Harvard's Program in Medical Education.
  • Provides instruction in literature-based research methods and database searching.
  • Designs and creates online educational materials in support of the Countway's educational goals.

Collection Development
  • Investigates, evaluates, and implements new information technology resources and tools.
  • Participates in the selection of resources to support the educational and research missions of the institutions the Countway serves.

Administrative Service
  • Participates in needs assessment, strategic planning, and program development.
  • Represents the Countway Library on appropriate Harvard Library committees, task forces, and project teams to support the larger mission of the Harvard Library.
  • Other duties or special projects as required.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution or advanced degree in the health sciences or a health-related field.
  • 3 or more years experience in an academic health sciences or biomedical library.

Additional Qualifications and Skills


  • A degree and experience in the health or biomedical sciences is preferred.
  • Experience in the production of evidence syntheses such as systematic reviews.
  • Expertise in searching health sciences literature databases and extensive knowledge of biomedical literature.
  • Knowledge of the principles of evidence-based practice in the health sciences.
  • Demonstrated teaching abilities and competence in developing and marketing educational programs.
  • Strong writing and speaking skills and a facility for interpersonal relations.
  • Ability to adapt to constantly changing information environments and priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse library users and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of the goals, collections, services, personnel, and procedures of a specialized academic library.

Additional Information

This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
