Job Summary
This position collects, processes, and analyzes data regarding state and local sentencing practices and the impact of statutory changes to criminal laws, and reports results to other staff members, the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission (MSGC), and other policymakers. Responsibilities include:
- Research, collect, code, verify, and present data, as directed, related to statewide sentencing practices to allow policymakers and the public to make informed choices regarding criminal justice policy.
- Attend Commission meetings and public hearings and create official meeting record to facilitate Commission’s role in improving statewide sentencing policy.
- Understand and apply complex sentencing policies to various cases to promote just and uniform application of sentencing policies.
- Assist with various administrative tasks to enable MSGC staff to function at maximum efficiency.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position:
- Two (2) years of technical experience in data management, analysis, and reporting.
- Knowledge of statistics and statistical methods.
- Knowledge of and/or experience using databases (e.g., Microsoft Access), spreadsheet software (e.g., Microsoft Excel), and statistical reporting packages (e.g., SPSS) sufficient to enter and retrieve data for reports and develop statistical charts, graphs, and tables.
- Reporting skills sufficient to collect, compile, and present data from multiple sources in an organized format.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Criminology, Sociology, or closely related field.
- Ability to multitask and meet multiple deadlines.
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system and sentencing policy.
- Experience conducting research, statistics, and/or quantitative analysis.
- Experience using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) or comparable statistical analysis system.
