Summary


The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for sustaining an effective support structure for the nursing functions in an inpatient clinical setting of Boone Memorial Hospital, Inc. (BMH), by providing optimal, safe, and effective nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process and the hospital policies and procedures. The RN is responsible for managing the individualized patient care by promoting and restoring patients' health through the nursing process; collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary team members; providing physical and psychological support to patients, friends, and families; and supervising assigned team members. The RN will perform routine technical nursing duties and assist with other related activities involved in providing patient care in compliance with nursing standards, as well as federal, state, and local government regulations.

The RN, under the supervision of a licensed medical provider, is expected to perform the following essential functions:

  • Obtaining and documenting via electronic system the Nursing Assessment via a complete Nursing History.
  • Developing and implementing nursing care plans for each individual patient with are consistent with the medical plan of care, revising as appropriate in keeping with changes in patient condition via electronic documentation.
  • Teaching the patient and family regarding the illness, ongoing care, and discharge planning.
  • Charting accurately on pertinent medical records and charts all information pertinent to the patient's condition, treatment, and progress within the realm of nursing responsibility. Including proficiency in the utilization of the electronic documentation and order entry.
  • Administering treatments and medication as ordered by the physicians.
  • Carrying out nursing measures within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Giving psychological and emotional support to patients and families.
  • Showing and demonstrating and awareness of the spiritual need of patients and families showing respect for individual beliefs.
  • Performing IV therapy.
  • Cooperating with other departments in the rendering of services to patients.
  • Assisting in the coordination of nursing and other activities.
  • Participating in in-service and continuing education activities for continued self-development and growth.
  • Knowing and supporting the philosophy, policies, and Standard of nursing Service and the hospital.
  • Assisting and maintaining the high standards of Nursing Care, attempting at all times to improve services to patient and family.
  • Checking inventory for availability of equipment, supplies and medications.
  • Providing orientation and direction for new employees of the nursing department.
  • Promoting a friendly, cooperative and helpful manner on the nursing unit.
  • Investigating complaints and problems and referring them to supervisor or appropriate department head.
  • Attending all meetings of nursing staff and is a member of nursing sub-committees, i.e. Quality Assurance, Infection Control, etc.
  • Attending continuing education.
  • Other tasks & duties as assigned.
  • Delegation of or assigning of, patient care activities to appropriate licensed or unlicensed individuals.
  • Determining which nursing acts in the implementation of care can be delegated or assigned to whom.
  • Assuring that care is provided in a safe and competent manner.
  • Providing direction and assistance, periodic observation and evaluation of effectiveness of acts performed by those under supervision

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

  • None

Physical demands

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • May require prolonged periods of standing, walking, moving, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, squatting, grasping and arm-hand coordination on a continuous basis.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.

Travel required

  • None expected.

Required education and experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Postsecondary completion of an associate degree or higher in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university or a diploma nursing program.
  • Successful completion of NCLEX-RN exam.
  • Current license through West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses.
  • Minimum of six months of recent experience as a Registered Nurse.

Preferred education and experience

  • BLS Certification (Preferred)
  • EMR Service, 1 year (Preferred)
