Job Objective: A brief overview of the position.
-
The RCP performing as a Pulmonary Function Technician or assisting in the Interventional Bronchoscopy suite performs diagnostic pulmonary function testing including spirometry, arterial blood gas analysis, bronchoscopy assists, functional reserve capacity, diffusing capacity and lung volume determinations on all patient populations served. Assists in the Pulmonary Clinic, and performs exercise oximetry analysis. Maintains communication between physicians, nursing and other departments as part of the health care delivery team. The Adult/Pediatric Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) is an individual who is professionally skilled in the application of respiratory care services and must have the ability to work well with minimum supervision. Abilities to meet the specific needs of these age groups may be gained through previous education, experience and/or additional education and training.

Qualifications
-
Required: Graduate from an AMA or JCRTE approved program for Respiratory Therapy. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential

Required: Current license for Respiratory Care Practitioner from the State of California and American Heart Association BLS; ACLS within 90 days of hire.

Preferred: Certified or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist; if not, CPFT or RPFT within 2 years
-
Required: Minimum of two years acute care hospital respiratory care or pulmonary function experience; if experience is in respiratory care, then evidence of bedside pulmonary function testing or evaluation.

Preferred: CPFT or RPFT, a minimum of one (1) year of performing pulmonary function testing.

Essential Responsibilities
-
Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.

Performs Pulmonary Function Testing according to policy and procedure.
-
Performs Pulmonary Function Testing accurately and timely.
-
Performs Arterial Blood Gas specimen collection and analysis according to policy and procedure.
-
Participates in scheduling of patients with departmental secretaries and physician’s offices.
-
Gathers statistical data as it pertains to the Pulmonary Laboratory.
-
Prioritizes workload according to patient’s needs.
-
Participates in activities, which results in professional and department growth. Functions as a resource person for medical staff, public, patients, families and guests.

Performs outpatient respiratory therapy treatments according to policy and procedures.
-
Assists pulmonary physicians with in and outpatient bronchoscopy procedures.
-
Assist pulmonary physicians with in and outpatient thoracentesis procedures.
-
Documents pertinent information at the time of testing.
-
Able to document and process procedures on a daily basis in the department records.
-
Process billing charges or credits as assigned.

Demonstrates the care and operation of equipment used in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory and Bronchoscopy Suite.

Maintains clean, well-stocked equipment with supplies and “in good working order “ after each shift.

Sterilizes/disinfects equipment according to policy and procedure.
-
Participates in department performance improvement and quality assessment programs.
-
Assists with photocopying, filing, charting of reports in-patients medical record as needed.
-
Reports any unsafe or mal-functioning equipment to the appropriate personnel and takes the necessary step in processing reported equipment.
-
Ability to organize the workload and set priorities to meet time requirements.
-
Cultivates positive interpersonal relations with physicians, coworkers and other staff members.
-
Demonstrates adaptability to working overtime and/or altering work schedule when necessary to provide patient care.

Self-sufficient in seeking resource; may have specialized skills; demonstrates significant problem solving skills.

Complies with policies; uses discretion and follows through with areas of concern.

Adheres to hospital infection control guidelines, body mechanics and safety, equipment usage and care.

Maintains a high productivity level.

Completes tasks in allotted time at the end of each shift.

Participates in Performance Improvement and Quality Assessment activities and interdisciplinary teams as appropriate.
