Job Summary
Security is an integral position responsible for representing the zoo and providing a safe and secure environment for all guests. We ensure the enforcement of safety, first aid, and customer service for all daily activities that relate to our guests.
Primary Job Functions (list three with specific tasks listed)
Primary Job #1 – Customer Service
  • Provide customer service to the zoo defined customers – collections, conservation, contractors, co-workers, donors, students, professional colleagues, vendors, visitors & volunteers
  • Must have positive communication skills utilizing the “GUEST” outline when providing educational activities, talking with zoo guests and answering questions
Greet – body language, tone of voice & approach
Understand – attentive & listening
Educate – answer questions
Serve – accommodating request of customers
  • Trains, assists when working with volunteers and interns; ensures public is safe while at zoo.
  • Attends meetings to discuss all aspects of the zoo in order to keep customers informed properly and to resolve concerns and learn of new procedures or policies.
Primary Job #2 - Security
  • As first responders on the grounds, must react to all emergencies, including but not limited to: severe weather, animal escapes, first aid, and lost child situations. This position is required to be a visible deterrent while providing guest control, which involves challenging situations by protecting life, health, and property.
  • Coordinates the requests and information with the incident commander, as assigned by the Security Manager or Supervisor. Must recognize and respond to hazards and monitor the grounds for behavior and safety concerns.
  • May correct behavior in a courteous and expedient manner in accordance to Zoo Policies. Maintain the ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
  • Provides necessary assistance to any guests, contacts law enforcement agencies as required, serves as liaison to law enforcement and emergency responders in the absence or at the direction of the Security Manager or Supervisor(s).

Primary Job #3Public Areas/Equipment
  • Ensures that all public areas are open and closed daily
  • Makes interior and exterior patrols, will also provide a thorough check of the entire grounds, while also assisting with parking lot traffic and crowd control. Provide theft surveillance of all buildings, putting an emphasis on merchandise areas.
  • Report native wildlife activity as assigned.
  • Ensures and operates all vehicles and equipment in a safe and informative manner.
  • Provide security escort for all areas of financial business on grounds, as requested.
  • Listen and respond to guest requests or concerns in a timely manner. Provide direction in crisis situations, defuse potentially violent situations. Formulate reports or document certain incidents by logging required counts on the appropriate forms.

Secondary Job Functions (list no more than five)
  • Maintains positive communication while utilizing the defined “GUEST” outline when providing educational activities, talking with zoo guests and answering questions
  • Completes required training and safely operates all zoo required equipment for completion of job duties
  • Assists in achieving the Zoo’s Mission, Vision and defined goals
  • Uses time efficiently to complete assigned tasks. Actively seeks ways to streamline processes and stays open to new ideas and approaches
Qualifications
Willingness and ability to form and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, customers, and team participants. The ability to convey information through written and oral expressions, sharing information willingly, utilizing tact and diplomacy.
Report to work at assigned time; provides adequate notice of absences and uses leave time appropriately; safely operates assigned equipment and provides for proper use and maintenance; work area is kept clean and orderly; time is efficiently used for assigned tasks.
Ability to maintain a pleasant demeanor and positive attitude while working under any conditions.
Minimum Qualifications include:
  • 18+ years in age
  • Valid State of Kansas Driver’s License or School ID
Preferred Qualifications include:
  • First Aid & CRP Training
Working Environment/Conditions
The employee is subject to activities that occur in both inside and outside environmental conditions.
The employee is subject to any potential hazards of working in a zoo. The employee is subject to potential hazards of working with and near dangerous animals. The employee may be exposed to zoonotic diseases.
Physical requirements
Physical ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs. Repetitive bending/reaching as needed daily.
