Job Summary:

Berkshire Grey is looking for a strong motivated Principal Mechatronics Engineer to help lead the development of Mobile Robots and Feed systems for the Mobile Robot Business Unit. This Person will strengthen our Engineering team and help set the direction of the Mechatronics Control function.

Berkshire Grey Mobile solutions are powered by robotic technologies and innovative Electro-Mechanical movements controlled by custom software. These robots operate in some of the most demanding material handling environments in the world. This Principal Mechatronics Engineer will leverage their mechanical, electrical and software design knowledge and experience to drive design improvements and create innovative new concepts for the next generation of robots. These Robots will be installed in the warehouses and distribution centers of some of the world’s largest retailers and distributors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work as a member of the multidisciplinary team to develop Mobile Robots.
  • Design and Develop Innovative drive systems, control electronics and software to power mobile robots, as well as safety systems to keep humans safe as they work with innovative material handling robotic systems.
  • Develop Concepts for Next Generation Mobile Robot control systems and safety systems.
  • Write motion control software, develop electrical schematics and system-level control architecture drawings.
  • Design and Develop Novel Active Robotic Safety systems using Siemens PLC’s coupled with cutting edge Light curtain, machine vision and RF technology.
  • Partner with product owners and the business development team to refine and capture the roadmap opportunities.
  • Refine business requirements into design requirements and product specifications to enable engineering hardware validation test plan development.
  • Partner with hardware quality engineering, manufacturing, supply chain and operations teams to support verification of design and high-quality manufacture of Robots and systems.
  • Use structured problem-solving techniques to drive for root cause, corrective actions, and validation of solutions.
  • Coach and mentor teammates and colleagues on Innovation and the development of new technology.
  • Customer interaction with large retail & distribution customer teams.
  • Travel as necessary to client, testing and deployment sites.

You Must Have:

  • S. Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Software, or Robotics Engineering is required, M.S. preferred.
  • Ability to analyze and solve complex mechanical, electrical & software problems to best meet the needs of our customers.
  • Experience with DFMEA, DFM, 8D Structured problem solving and the quality tools used in Design for Six Sigma Processes.
  • Experience with PLC programming (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, CodeSys, …) with ladder logic or structured text.
  • Exposure to Projects where PLC systems are connected to other computer systems.
  • A positive attitude and passion for getting hands on to see your creations come to life.
  • Ability to work in teams, influence and align with cross-functional team members to deliver optimal collaborative outcomes.
  • Strong Communication skills in both spoken and written form.
  • Ability to adapt to project challenges in a fast paced, quickly changing environment.

We Value:

  • Experience with new product development processes and technology development roadmaps.
  • Experience with selection of sensors, motors, control systems.
  • 3-5 years hands-on experience in mechatronics engineering focusing on electromechanical, safety systems or control system design.
  • Exposure to AS interface, ProfiNET, OPC-UA, Ethernet/IP.
  • Previous experience designing, maintaining, or repairing robotics and production equipment strongly desired.
  • A strong track record of successful contribution to products & projects.
  • Experience with Safety systems, IEC 61508, functional safety standards, machinery control.
  • Exposure to Software Development in C++ or Python.
  • Experience with automated material handling, control, and/or warehouse management systems and conveyor solutions.
  • Knowledge of Design and FEA and CFD simulation & modeling software
  • Knowledge of testing, manufacturing, and quality control processes.
  • Experience with Formed Sheet Metal, Machined Aluminum and Steel, Welded Aluminum and Steel, Injection Molded Plastic, Reaction injected Plastics, Anodizing, powder coating, electroplating and other common manufacturing techniques for mechanical components.
  • A self-motivated, positive attitude and the ability to be a technical leader working as part of the team with little management supervision.
  • Agility and adaptability in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Experience working with JIRA for Task/Project Management and Agile methodology.
  • Comfort with processes and goals that are not always formalized in writing.
