Physical Therapy Assistant
The employee must obtain an associate degree as a physical therapy assistant from an accredited college. The employee must also have passed the Missouri State Boards or have applied to take the boards within 30 days. In the event that the employee does not pass the boards he/she may be terminated. Once the individual passes the Missouri State Boards he/she may be reconsidered for a position. Employee must be physically able to lift/carry and push/pull an average of 10-200 pounds frequently; reach overhead, sit, and climb occasionally; walk, squat, bend, kneel, and stand frequently. Employee may be exposed to blood/body fluids and other communicable diseases.
The following job duties may be revised by the department manager and may not encompass all day by day duties.
Primary job duties of the Physical Therapy Assistant
· Perform inpatient, outpatient, work conditioning treatments as directed by the physical therapist
· Perform quality treatment that is customized to the individual patient with appropriate progression
· Communicate with the physical therapist & physician regarding patent progress or any concerns related to patient treatment
· Educate patients on techniques for prevention/wellness as needed
· Inform the therapist attending the swing bed meeting of inpatient progress/decline
· Determine when inpatients are PHYSICALLY safe to return home
· Recommend assistive devices and/or assistance for inpatients whom are returning home and inform social services
· Work with nursing staff to promote the swing bed program; i.e. removing BSC, patient dressing, etc.
· Perform weekly patient goal reassessments
· Write progress notes as needed
· Ensure the patient’s script is up-to-date
· Communicate with worker’s compensation case managers, see clinic protocol or as requested by specific WC case manager
· Communicate with appropriate inter-disciplinary staff
· Write cancellations and no shows in the patient’s chart
· PROMOTE OUR PHYSICAL THERAPY DEPARTMENT to patients, physicians, caseworkers, community, co-workers, etc.
Secondary duties
· Schedule patients
· Answer the phone and make calls as required
· Fax PT progress notes, and discharge notes with date and whom it was sent to written on notes
· Remind the secretary if follow-up communication has not been performed to ensure signed evaluations are received on Medicare patients within 30 days of the evaluation
· File evaluations, progress notes, discharges, insurance info, etc. in appropriate chart location
· Distribute faxes to charts/departments as appropriate
· Place department orders as approved by the department manager
· Communicate and direct patient’s to appropriate location
· Make sure preauthorization is received
· Relay visit number’s and co-pays to the patient
· Set up new patient charts
· Answer patient questions within knowledge or direct questions to appropriate individual
· Inform the department manager of any complaints
· Assist other therapists as needed with initiation of treatment if your schedule allows, otherwise inform the treating therapist when a patient arrives
· If a patient is early or late for an appointment inform the patient of the scheduled appointment time & the therapist will determine whether the patient must wait or reschedule
· Clean up patient rooms and ensure all weights, bolsters, etc. are cleaned and put away
· Fill the whirlpool when needed and clean the whirlpool after patient use
Other Essential Duties of the job:
· Exemplifies excellent service to all individuals including but not limited to physicians, patients, families, staff, visitors, co-workers, payers, volunteers, and other departments
· Demonstrates personal and professional development by completing necessary continuing education to enhance clinical skills and as required by state regulations
· Participates in all staff meetings
· Reports any problems or complaints to supervisor
· Follows code of conduct and maintains confidentiality
· Utilize daily tools such as but not limited to: weights, walkers, crutches, canes, wheelchairs, braces, theraband, etc.
· Operate equipment such as but not limited to: ultrasound, electrical stimulation, TENS, CPM, treadmill, bikes, leg press, traction, etc.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $21.00 - $31.00 per hour
