Job Summary

The Acute Hemodialysis Unit is dedicated to providing the highest quality patient and family centered care for patients with acute and chronic renal failure. We have an interdisciplinary approach to offering the best patient and family centered care. The Patient Services Associate will provide clerical duties and limited patient care, receiving general supervision from the Clinical Nursing Director and Nursing Supervisor, and functional supervision from the nursing staff.

Responsibilities*

Clerical Duties
Receive, screen and route telephone calls and messages to nursing staff, physicians, and patients; routinely check phone messages
Utilize the transportation tracking system and notify patient units for each shift of patients as directed by charge nurse
Contact Environmental Services to arrange unit cleaning
Contact appropriate departments (Security, Maintenance, etc.) for issues that arise within the unit
Schedule, arrive/check in and check out patients
Print patient labels and patient identification wristbands as needed
Obtain medication from Pharmacy, as directed by nursing staff
Order medical equipment and supplies, as requested by charge nurse or unit leadership
Respond to the unit patient call system
Send and receive items via the unit tube station
Image forms into the electronic health record (EHR)
Maintain physician/fellow on-call board
File paperwork in appropriate area
Respond to urgent/emergent requests including contacting appropriate staff and providing non-medical support
Request records for incoming patients from outpatient hemodialysis units
Forward informationg regarding patient care, treatment and accesses to outpaitent hemodialysis units
Operate standard office automation devices such as fax, scanner, printer, and copier including responsibility for basic maintenance tasks such as replacing toner and paper (daily) as well as contacting the vendor for service
Obtain outpatient insurance verification and pre-authorizations; communicate appropriately with multidisciplinary team
Process departmental mail daily
Provide coverage for Interventional Nephrology Unit phones as necessary
Orient new staff members to clerical duties
Maintain available copies of unit forms
Complete unit audits as assigned
Assist with special projects and other clerical duties as assigned by leadership
Patient Care
Greet patients/visitors and assist to the appropriate area
Respond to patient/visitor requests and complaints and direct to the appropriate staff member
Assist with moving stretchers and patients to the appropriate area
Assist with cubicle turnover, including disinfecting equipment and relining machine
Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications*

High school graduate or completion of General Education Development (GED)
Two (2)- three (3) years’ recent clerical experience, including coordinating complex tasks and problem solving with limited supervisory direction, as evidenced by references and performance evaluations
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Knowledge of standard office equipment
Desired Qualifications*

Knowledge of MM policies and procedures
Two (2) years’ recent experience in a healthcare setting
Previous experience obtaining insurance authorizations from multiple insurance carriers
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Work Schedule

36-hour, 0.9 FTE position with rotating Saturdays and holidays, 0730 – 2000
Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
