Position Summary:
Newton-Wellesley Hospital / Commonwealth Pathology Partners is seeking a full time Pathologists’ Assistant to join our team. The position is based at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital Department of Pathology in Newton, MA where you will work alongside a second experienced Pathologists’ Assistant processing a full range of human surgical pathology specimens for pathologic evaluation under the general supervision of the Director of Anatomic Pathology. Primary responsibilities include gross description and prosection of surgical and biopsy specimens, triage of tissue for special studies, preparation of frozen sections and facilitating the activities that occur upon the request of an autopsy.
Essential Duties include but are not limited to:
Surgical Pathology:
- Performs gross description, dissection, and selection of appropriate tissue sections for evaluation of a wide variety of large and small surgical and biopsy specimens.
- Appropriately triages tissue for different types of fixation or special studies (flow cytometry, cytogenetics, immunofluorescence, etc.).
- Photographs and/or radiographs specimens as needed.
- Monitors the intake of surgical specimens from the ORs to ensure appropriate fixation and diagnostic viability.
- Ensures correct patient identification and labeling of all materials throughout the grossing process.
- Follows departmental specimen storage policies and discards specimens as necessary.
- Assist in keeping work area clean, organized, and in compliance with all safety regulations, departmental policies or standards required by The Joint Commission, College of American Pathologists, or other regulatory agencies.
- Assists in troubleshooting problems that arise with mislabeling of specimens or specimen processing, etc.
Frozen sections:
- Assists in frozen section examinations, cuts and stains high quality frozen section slides for examination by the pathologist.
- Maintains frozen section equipment in the Frozen Section Lab.
Autopsy:
- Autopsies are not performed on-site but referred to a local academic institution.
- Assists the pathologist to ensure all autopsy authorization paperwork is complete prior to referral of the patient off site.
- Coordinates with Hospital Admitting facilitating transport of the patient off-site for autopsy.
General:
- Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.
- Works with the Director of Anatomic Pathology to develop and update policies and procedures as needed.
- Works with the Pathology Manager to ensure adequate inventory of grossing room and frozen section supplies and equipment.
- Uses appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Participates in and successfully completes mandatory education.
- Performs additional duties or administrative tasks as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
- Ability to function independently.
- Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Ability to collaborate and effectively communicate with Pathologists, Pathologists' Assistants, Pathology Manager, Histotechnologists, and a range of interdepartmental hospital staff in person, over the telephone and via e-mail.
- Ability to use a PC, PC based software (CoPath, Epic) and computerized equipment.
- Must be able to speak clearly and work effectively with a voice dictation system (Dragon).
- Fine motor skills with good hand eye coordination.
Education, Certification, Licensure:
- Minimum of Baccalaureate degree, Master's degree in accredited Pathologists' Assistant Program and PA (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.

Pay: $100,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
