Role and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Outreach Coordinator, the Outreach worker’s major function is to outreach to active substance abusers to reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
OUTREACH (80%):
- Conduct street outreach to active substance users that are high risk for HIV/AIDS.
- Implement HIV/AIDS Risk Reduction Plan.
- Develop outreach materials including flyers, brochures and educational materials and handouts.
- Conduct small group skills building workshops.
- Communicate with sensitivity to clients from diverse language and cultural backgrounds.
- Implement follow up surveys.
- Assist Outreach Coordinator in the preparation of reports and correspondence.
- Perform other related duties as assigned
CASE FOLLOW UPS (20%):
- Communicate with DCS, Probation Department and other community or government agencies to assist in client case follow up.
- Conduct individual referral assessments.
- Advocate for client rights.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Two years of college education related to field or equivalent work experience related to field
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in computer operations.
- Must be able to certify as a Class B driver in 4 months.
Preferred Skills
- Bilingual or bicultural capabilities with Los Angeles County threshold languages: Arabic, Armenian, Cantonese, Farsi, Urdu, Khmer (Cambodian), Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and other Chinese languages.
- BA Degree in Social Welfare, Psychology or other treatment-related field with at least two years job related experience, or Drug and Alcohol certificate with at least five years experience in a job-related field.
- Experience in HIV/AIDS outreach services.
General Requirements and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s):
- Permanent resident or U.S. Citizen; proof of work eligibility upon hiring.
- Valid California Drivers License and current automobile liability insurance.
- Must have three (3) years of recovery or drug free lifestyle as of the date of the application.
- Recent physical examination and TB test necessary upon hiring.
- Must provide proof of full vaccination and 1st Booster against Covid-19 upon hiring.
- Ability to get along well with others, be punctual, pleasant, and tactful with professional appearance and conduct.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, clients and their families, community organizations, and the general public.
- Ability to be culturally competent of age groups, gender identity, sexual orientation, spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic status, and diverse cultures.
Physical Requirements:
Moderate Duty
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting reaching, working or irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Ascending and descending ladders and staircase will be more frequent. An example is this position frequently will be moving and organizing agency supplies.
