The Orthopaedic Technologist works under the direction of the unit manager, physicians and nursing
professionals in the application and removal of specific orthopaedic casts, soft goods and braces.
Performs a wide variety of services as a member of the patient care team in the treatment and care of
patients including advanced, technical patient care procedures and general patient procedures. Assists
with tasks which support the unit in order to maintain a safe, clean and orderly work environment.
Performs application of specific casts: Upper Extremities - short arm, long arm
and sugar tong. Lower Extremities - short leg walking (neutral 90, dorsiflex 90
and above and plantar flex 45), long leg walking, cylinder, hip spica (unilateral
and bilateral), stump (below knee and above knee), body (risser and under arm
risser), splints (posterior arm and posterior leg). Percent of specific job duties will
vary based on scheduled physicians and their specialties.
Performs applications of braces: Hinged knee brace, tibal fracture, stat limbs, hip
adduction, AFO's, ankle braces and milwaukee brace. Percent of specific job
duties will vary based on scheduled physicians and their specialties.
Assist in Gait teaching: Cane, walker, crutches (swing through, non-weight
bearing, 2 point gait, 3 point gait, 4 point gait, up form chair, sitting in chair and
Up and Down stairs.

Required: High School Diploma plus training acquired through work experience or education
