Applied Ecology, Inc., a small environmental consulting business with a rapidly expanding footprint, is seeking a highly motivated and energetic Mid-Level Environmental Scientist/Ecologist to join our growing team. AEI has three offices located in Florida and is a regional leader in geospatial services, water resources, ecological and natural resources, and environmental remediation and contamination services. This position is a mixture of field and in-office support.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys a mixture of office and field work and enjoys a diversity of project types, ranging from uplands to coastal applications.
Qualified candidates must have demonstrated experience and expertise in natural resources and ecological issues relevant to Florida and southeastern US. Competency is desired in one or more areas including environmental/wetland assessments, ecological analyses, permitting, NEPA documentation, listed species surveys, and habitat/wetland restoration.
Candidate should have a minimum of 4 years of professional experience. This position requires a strong background in ecological and natural resource management, solid organizational skills, excellent technical writing skills, a self-starter with proven initiative, willingness to mentor junior staff, and learn project management skills.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
- Field work such as wetland delineations, vegetation and habitat mapping, listed species surveys, gopher tortoise relocation, submerged resource surveys, sediment studies and other miscellaneous environmental services
- Coordinate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to design field sampling plans, avoid or minimize environmental impacts and develop a permitting strategy
- Participate in environmental investigation programs including Phase l/ll Environmental Site
- Assessments and Section 404/401, state, and local environmental permitting
- Conduct ESA Section 7 consultation and Section 10 permitting
- Review and prepare NEPA documentation
- Prepare environmental impact statements and assessments
- Oversee rare, threatened and endangered species surveys
- Conduct environmental/ecological analyses, interpret data and write technical reports
- Prepare or support the preparation of permit applications
- Assist the project manager in meetings with environmental regulatory agencies
- Coordinate and communicate with internal project team and clients
- Assist with business development, preparing scope and fees, support the development of presentations and negotiations for contract pursuits
- Learn budget tracking, scheduling, and other project management skills working closely under senior project managers
- Mentor/train junior environmental staff
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- B.S. or B.A. in Environmental Science, Biology, Fisheries and Wildlife, Ecology, Natural Resources, or related field (Masters preferred)
- 4 years of experience in environmental science/ecology, or natural resources management
- Coursework or project experience in plant identification, plant ecology, wildlife species, wetland identification, and/or aquatic habitats
- Fieldwork experience in Florida/Southeastern natural habitats, whether through coursework or professional experience
- Ability to identify flora within the Central Florida region using technical keys/regional references.
- Ability to delineate wetlands and familiarity with wetland functional analysis
- Familiarity with permitting requirements and documentation (preferably both State and Federal)
- Ability to work in the field in various types of weather, and the ability to lift heavy equipment (30 pounds) required, as well as stand, bend, twist, and walk for 8 hours a day
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication and presentation skills
- Proficiency using Microsoft office suite
- Must demonstrate an ability in collaborative problem solving with stakeholders and peers
- A valid Florida Driver's license is required, and a clean driving record must be maintained.
- Must be able to pass drug testing and a background check.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or legally eligible to work in the United States under the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5-7 years of experience with introduction to project management/project tracking requirements
- Graduate degree preferred
- PWS certification preferred
- Experience working on federal projects/federal facilities.
- NEPA experience
- Gopher Tortoise Authorized agent
- Experience interacting with clients and agency professionals
- Scuba certified
- Experience with handling small watercraft
- Experience in ESRI ArcGIS software applications, including mapping and editing of spatial data is preferred.
- Willingness to learn additional GIS skills and motivated to use problem solving skills for diverse environmental projects.
