Summary:

Seeking a Microbiologist I to support research projects developing methods to isolate, detect, and characterize microbial agents found in dietary supplements.
Responsibilities:
Essential Job Functions:
  • Work requires the use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques in microbiology and molecular biology.
  • The focus of this position will be on the isolation and characterization of microbes found in dietary supplements.
  • Secondary activities will be to provide laboratory support to senior level researchers by performing RNA/DNA extractions, PCR, and next generation sequencing.
  • Record and analyze results, organize data, perform basic computations, and develop reports and summaries of analyses.
  • Operate basic and advanced laboratory equipment, including laminar flow hoods, incubators, thermal cyclers, and other lab equipment.
  • Perform nucleic acid extractions.
  • Prepare samples to run on PCR or qPCR equipment and samples to run on next generation sequencers.
Qualifications:
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
  • Familiarity with next generation sequencing and PCR will be a plus.
  • Professional knowledge of microbiology and related biological science fields sufficient for independently performing recurring, precedential projects using standard methods and techniques.
  • Professional knowledge and skill to perform and monitor the full range of specialized tests and non-routine procedures for which there are standard methods and techniques, to calculate and correlate test results, and to verify results.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Visual acuity to determine accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness to make laboratory observations.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or related field.
  • 0 – 2 years’ experience in a research laboratory with knowledge of safe laboratory practices.
  • Experience in standard microbiology techniques such as generation of pure cultures and use of sterile techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with microbiological and/or molecular biology lab techniques such as bacterial isolation and culture, nucleic acid extraction, PCR, and next generation sequencing are required.
