Position Summary

The role of Manager - Data Center Operations is responsible for supporting all aspects of the CPS Energy data center ecosystem with a focus on providing resiliency, redundancy and high availability of critical infrastructure supporting core operations. This position will work collaboratively within internal and external stakeholders, suppliers, and partners to ensure data center operations are aligned with defined requirements. This position will also organize and maintain the Data Center operations team and its responsibilities.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for scheduling and performance of all Data Center team projects.
  • Responsible for proper performance and metrics of project tasks necessary to ensure the most efficient and effective execution of all Data Center projects.
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of deployment activities across multiple deployments, including status, deployment dates, and issues/risk.
  • Responsible for analysis of cost, schedule, and performance of the projects within the Data Center.
  • Responsible for future deployment schedule estimation and tracking, project performance management, risk management, requirements analysis, and quality assurance.
  • Directs skilled personnel resources for all Data Center projects, actions, and tasks.
  • Understand (at a high level) the technical aspects of all Data Center team projects.
  • Writes and reviews Data Center program-related technical documents and Run Books.
  • Manage daily ticket queue.
  • Guide, train and educate staff on the best practices related to all service owner issues.
  • Recommend, document, and oversee policies and procedures to meet industry best practices and to meet required SLAs.
  • Maintain the on-call schedule coordinating absence and vacations.
  • Recruit and train data technicians to ensure appropriate staffing levels.
  • Write and deliver performance reviews for staff.
  • Monitor, maintain, and scale Disaster Recovery and High Availability solutions for all IT systems.
  • Diagnose and quickly resolve problems to help minimize downtime.
  • Ensure that all Datacenter and other IT related areas are well organized and operational.
  • Interface with and support stakeholders.
  • Work with building Facilities group to maintain a 100% uptime of the Data Centers.
  • Responsible for providing all Data Center support equipment.
  • Manage proper personnel access lists to the Data Centers with Security.
  • Work with security to maintain proper types of access equipment (badge readers, etc).
  • Work with the NERC Compliance group to ensure all Data Centers meet standards.
  • Manage the purchasing and storage of Safety hardware for Data Centers and staff (cones, barriers, hazard tape, lifting belts and equipment such as ladders, stairs, etc.).
  • Responsible for safety regulation compliance.

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

The ability to supervise others to achieve an assigned goal (project management).
The skills necessary to perform new hardware installation and setup.
The skills necessary to perform decommissioning and proper disposal of hardware.
The responsibility for proper setup and metrics of project tasks necessary to ensure the most efficient and effective execution of all Data Center Operations projects.
The ability to perform routine maintenance of the Data Centers and surrounding facilities.
The responsibility for analysis of cost, schedule, and performance of the projects within the Data Center.
The ability to work with other CPS Energy or external organizations to plan and complete larger projects of hardware installation and setup with minimal or no supervision and have those systems integrate with operations with little or no complications.
The ability to create a future deployment schedule, tracking, project performance management, risk management, requirements analysis, and quality assurance.
The ability to monitor, maintain, and scale Disaster Recovery and High Availability solutions for all IT systems.
The ability to diagnose and correct unusual problems associated with the Data Centers and supporting infrastructures.
The ability to create/update Data Center Documentation and Procedures.
Have a solid understanding of network infrastructure components and applications.
Have a working understanding of TCP/IP networking.
Have a solid understanding of host security (passwords, file permissions, file system integrity, security packages) and network security concepts.
Have the ability to work with people from various disciplines with varying degrees of technical skills in a professional manner.
Pass a security background check as prescribed by NERC.
Ability to maintain a positive attitude while adapting to quickly changing demands.
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Have an operational and reliable personal vehicle.
Able to drive his/her personal vehicle to different CPS worksites if required.
Excellent personal computing skills including proficiency with standard office automation software such as MS Word, Excel, Project, Visio and Outlook.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information for security compliance.
Possess a thorough knowledge of CPS Energy safety regulations.
The ability to read building/room diagrams, update and maintain them.
(To include any software-based application like a Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) tool).
Facilities knowledge: HVAC systems, Power Distribution Units, UPS Systems, etc.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Business Management, or other related field of study.

Working Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Employee may potentially be exposed to hazardous chemicals, wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather, noisy & dusty environment. Ability to travel to & from meetings, training sessions or other busi-related events. After hours and call duty work required.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
The position is only mildly Sedentary (work involves being active most of the time).
